Gimme hope Jo'anna: The correct English is "Give me hope Joanna"

Jo'anna: Some people think Jo'anna is a reference to Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, but it doesn't make sense: that city didn't suffer the apartheid. In fact, Johannesburg opposed apartheid. Actually, Jo'anna refers to Johan Vorster, the Prime Minister at that time.

To run in a place = To control the place.

Durban y Transvaal: They are two cities with majority of “Afrikaans” (white people who descende from Dutch).

Soweto: It's the place of origin of Nelson Mandela, next to Johannesburg. During apartheid, when a black person crossed to a "white place" without authorization, he finished in prison or killed by the police.

Sun City: Johannesburg is also known as "the city of gold", as translated from the Zulu name "eGoli". Sun City was also a luxury hotel in Johannesburg only for white people.

The Archbishop who's a peaceful man": It's a reference to Desmond Tutu, the first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town who received the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his fight against apartheid

Although South Africa goverment banned this song, it was immensely popular in South Africa, especially among the Afrikaner communities, who often failed to see the message of the song.

This song became the unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid movement, but outside of South Africa, very few people understood the real meaning and they thought it was a simple reggae song.
