Using varied assessment methods and being adaptable is a strength because I received positive feedback from my associate teacher and observed improved student engagement and performance in response to my implemented assessments.

For example, when preparing my students for the EQAO, I challenged myself to present EQAO practice questions/reviews in fun and engaging ways. These included but were not limited to using a gallery walk style activity, which had the students working in groups, then having to present a specific math problem after. This assessment allowed for collaboration and teamwork and required the students to explain their thinking, which provided me with valuable information on their understanding of the material.

Additionally, I used fun and interactive online assessment tools such as Bamboozle, Quizlet, and Kahoot. These tools allowed for immediate feedback, which motivated my students to participate and learn from their mistakes. It also helped inform my teaching and lesson planning and helped me create more relevant lessons. The use of technology also provided me with detailed data on each student's performance, which allowed me to adjust my instruction and assessment to meet their individual needs.

Overall, these examples demonstrate my ability to use varied assessment methods and adapt to meet the needs of my learners.

During my placement, I designed and assigned a "rich task" that integrated multiple subject areas, including science, social studies, and language. Specifically, I asked my students to write a persuasive letter to the federal government, advocating for adding more airstrips to our local airport in North Bay from the perspective of an MP. While I could read and assess many student letters, my feedback could have been more detailed and precise to support my students' learning and growth. As I expand in subsequent sections, my ability to provide descriptive and meaningful feedback will improve as I continue to grow as a teacher and learn as a student in the Faculty of Education. Setting goals and researching the subject are other keys to my future success in this area!

In addition to improving my ability to provide descriptive feedback, I aim to teach my students what meaningful feedback is and how to give it to their peers. During my placement, I noticed that students often struggled to provide feedback beyond general comments such as "good job" or "needs improvement." Teaching students how to give specific, actionable feedback can not only improve their writing but also help them develop valuable communication and critical thinking skills. By implementing peer assessment and modelling effective feedback techniques in the classroom, I aim to empower my students to take ownership of their learning and become more proficient.

My next step regarding my assessment area of need is to improve my ability to provide precise and descriptive feedback to my students through research and practice. Specifically, I aim to develop my skills in breaking down assessment criteria into specific components and providing actionable feedback that supports student learning and growth. Furthermore, I need to ensure that I take the time to assess and take the necessary time with each student accurately. This goal is important because giving descriptive feedback is crucial for student learning and achievement.

During my placement, I demonstrated strength in using varied assessment methods and adaptability. Using various assessment methods (which I will elaborate on in subsequent sections), I accurately measured student understanding. I provided multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge in a way that suited their learning style (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic). Additionally, by being adaptable, I adjusted my assessments to meet the needs of individual learners and ensured that all students were being assessed fairly and effectively. In other words, I moved away from "safer" or "traditional" assessment formats (exit tickets and individual quizzes). I expanded my repertoire to make it more engaging for the students and informative for me as an educator.
