New definition of the canon

The symphony used to be the opportune place to visit, it was as common as going to the movies or an amusement park. But as time has progressed, the younger generation has shied away from symphony performances. Because of this, Orchestras have been forced to find new ways to attract the younger crowd. Both the Colorado symphony and the San Antonio symphony have played pieces like Lord of the Rings suites and Harry Potter scores over a showing of the films in order to draw people in for their performances of classical music like Strauss and Mozart. In addition to the pop culture performances the two orchestras have diverging tastes in repertoire. San Antonio has only recently caught up with the rest of the symphonic world in diversifying their repertoire which used to be saturated with Strauss and Brahms. As of last year they brought more Mozart and more classical artists into the mix with a new repertoire for 2017 that is starting to open up. The Colorado symphony is much more open to their performances. Among their performance plans for the year there are renditions of Stravinsky to prince. The Colorado orchestra has a more diverse selection of composers like the upcoming Latin Beats concert paying homage to the sounds of South and Central Americas composers. They are also doing a nightmare before Christmas concert for the Halloween season. When it comes to what I would like to see preformed, is I would like the San Antonio symphony to open up a little more and for the Colorado Symphony to keep doing what its doing.

“By the end of the 20th century, new anthologies began to appear that collected, say, for example, British women Romantic poets and thereby gave the lie to the longstanding notion that Romantic poetry in Britain consisted of five or six men, rather than the literally hundreds of active poets, many of whom were not only women and laboring-class writers but also really good writers,”
-Behrent on construction of a new western canon
