In my last note, I wrote about how teachers like me can set goals during career development.

Since I have been having a lot of stress with the elementary students in my Math/Science online classes, I decided that I would take up the goal of improving mindfulness in teaching.

A book I chose for this topic is Teach, Breathe, Learn: Mindfulness in and Out of the Classroom by Meena Srinivasan. She is an Indian teacher who has a journalistic background (hence really clear writing), and has taught in various schools in and outside her country.

I just finished the introduction, and I hope this book would be a cure to my problem. Meena used to suffer from the same problem as I do: having to make a lot of decisions in class (with insufficient preparation) and not having enough time to reflect later. She also got hurt (emotionally) by students' words and rudeness, and would not deal with this wisely had it not been for the practice of mindfulness.

I guess that's for now. I will update more with you as I read.

Cheers,

Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself - Part I: The Science of You - Chapter 1: The Quantum of You

*I changed the book because the other one wasn't what I need right now*

Intro:
After several years in teaching and studying neuroscience, Dr. Joe Dispenza found out that our brains have a significant impact on every aspects of our lives. In this book, he wants to show people how to change their outer world by changing their inner world.

Chapter 1: The Quantum of You

Our thoughts and feelings define our realities. How we see things is dependent on how we feel. If we truly believe in this, we would use this power more carefully and wisely. Descartes and Newton established that everything is predetermined, meaning human's actions don't matter. However, Einstein countered those beliefs by proving that energy and matter are one. A discovery by quantum physicists showed that

"...electrons exists simultaneously in an array of possibilities or probabilities in an invisible field of energy. The moment an observer looks for an electron, there is a point in time and space when all probabilities of the electron collapse into a physical event."

This means what you think and feel on the energy level can turn into your physical reality. There is an infinite number of possibilities and by understanding how to use your mind, you can 'collapse into' the reality that you WANT.

We are all part of everything around us and we can be affected by anything no matter how far or close we are to it. We are all connected beyond space and time. 'You' in the future is already in connection with 'you' right now. An experiment with two groups of patients (one was prayed for and the other wasn't) demonstrated that sending our intention to the quantum field (by prayers) can affect our past, present and future. For a physical reality to happen, we need both intention (thoughts) and feelings. It means if you think of something with elevated emotions about it, it's more likely to become reality. But your thoughts and emotions have to be aligned. If you think about 'wealth' but you feel poor, then you are sending a mixed message into the quantum field, making it harder for the reality to exist.

We are one with the Universe and everything around us. The universal intelligence that gives life to you and me is the same intelligence that is present in every aspect of the material universe. When we experience a feeling and hold it in our minds and bodies, we send out these thoughts and feelings like radio waves into the quantum field. The universal intelligence then responds to us by sending more events that resonate with our frequencies (thoughts and feelings). This is why when you keep ruminating on the past experiences, the same things happen to you over and over again.

Reading about mindfulness at 2 AM after marking students' works make it seem quite hard to understand.

I can totally make sense of what the author is writing, BUT I cannot relate to it. I cannot imagine how sitting for 45 minutes breathing in and out will help me log into the class with more confidence. Usually, I take my confidence from good preparation, but a lot of times preparation would meet with something very unexpected and it turned out I had no Plan B.

The author suggested breathing in and out in all activities, even the small ones like cutting papers for students (How I translated into my situation: adding points to Classdojo? Making slides?). I guess I would need to read a bit more to decide if I should continue with it.

See you tomorrow!
