The Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public on May 24, 1883, thereby connecting Manhattan with Brooklyn for the first time. Dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” early visitors gawked at its immense granite towers and thick steel cables, not to mention its birds-eye views. The bridge, which took 14 years and around $15 million to complete, remains among New York City’s top tourist attractions and a busy thoroughfare for commuters. Check out 10 things you may not know about the frequently photographed landmark.

Workers known as “sandhogs”—many of them immigrants earning about $2 a day—used shovels and dynamite to clear away the mud and boulders at the bottom of the river. Each week, the caissons inched closer to the bedrock. When they reached a sufficient depth—44 feet on the Brooklyn side and 78 feet on the Manhattan side—they began laying granite, working their way back up to the surface

It would be the very first steel suspension bridge, boasting the longest span in the world: 1,600 feet from tower to tower.

Police Corruption in Manhatten in 1960'

In Manhatten, in the 1960's, police corruption was widespread. There was something called a "blue wall of silence" that meant no officer would report the wrong doings of a fellow officer.
David Durk was police detective that wanted to expose that wall. He claimed that some officers were involved in many ways of corruption. Some of these crimes included taking payoffs from drug dealers, gamblers, and even mobsters to protect them from the law. durk was a clean cop who wanted this to stop so he decided to testify to the Knapp Commision who investigated police corruption. He worked with an officers named Sepico ( who became famous In a movie later about his life). The two of them complained about what they were seeing in the police department to the administration and got no cooperation. They got very frustrated and finally
took their story to the New York Times.
The mayor then got someone to investigate the charges. The lawyer was Whitman Knapp. Charges were brought, but basically , all the higher ups in the department got away with it..
