During this semester, we have looked at different chapters in Ben Ratliff's book, Every Song Ever. I have learned a lot about music and the different parts and perspectives of music. I do struggle to understand Ratliff's wording sometimes, making it difficult to internalize and write about. I also struggled with the examples he uses sometimes because most of them are not songs I know, or would have heard of. I did learn about many different qualities of music and look at music very differently because of this book and the light he shines on music.

Why This Book

At first, I did not understand this book at all or how it is set up. Ratliff says in the introduction, "We all know music is there. Some of us know, roughly, how to encounter a lot of it. But once we hear it, how can allow ourselves to make sense of it?" (Ratliff 3). I used this book to teach me how to encounter and make sense of the music I listen to by using the tools and qualities he explains in the book.

Like I said, this book has taught me a lot about how to listen to music and how to analyze it but I also had some trouble with this book. I had trouble reading what he was saying sometimes because it is very analytical and can be hard for someone that is not used to this type of reading. The music was also sometimes hard to comprehend because it is not something I normally listen to or would understand.

How This Changed How I Listened

This book definitely changed how I listen to music. "The most significant progress in the recent history of music has to do with listening. How we listen to music could be, for perhaps the first time in centuries, every bit as important to its history and evolution as what the composer intends when writing it" (Ratliff 4). After reading this and the first few chapters, I realized that I had been listening to music so simple mindedly and I could use the things I was reading about to help redefine my music taste
