I have learned a lot about music and the different parts and perspectives of music. I do struggle to understand Ratliff's wording sometimes, making it difficult to internalize and write about. I also struggled with the examples he uses sometimes because most of them are not songs I know, or would have heard of. Ratliff says in the introduction, "We all know music is there. Some of us know, roughly, how to encounter a lot of it. But once we hear it, how can allow ourselves to make sense of it?" (Ratliff 3). I had trouble reading what he was saying sometimes because it is very analytical and can be hard for someone that is not used to this type of reading.
