I know for us, we are a small school and we have "Sources of Strength" people for students to reach out to if they are needing a friend. Maybe implement this same concept but academic side. If they are struggling with a math assignment, and need help, they go to someone that has volunteered to be that person willing to assist. And it would have to be someone the kids feel comfortable with. i think Sources of Strength peer group has been great in our school.
