to not have personal relationship following a professional relationship. It could be seen as harmless but it states in the article that this has caused SU significant emotional distress. Even though he is no longer a practising social worker, the consequences will still be the same. the language he used was inappropriate . He suggested inappropriate activities for them to do. He is treating their relationship as if he was never her social worker and that there was never a professional relationship. It states in the article he showed no remorse and did not seem sorry or even agree he did anything wrong. In our own practise we have agreed we would act very differently from the start, we agree we would maintain professional boundaries and if a SU wanted to know anything about previous life events or communication we had we would follow standards and deal with it in a appropriate manor.

We have learnt from reading this article how important confidentiality is and understanding the impact it has on vulnerable families lives. It doesn’t just make you as a social work look bad and upset the lives of the families involved but it also doesn’t help the bad ‘stigma’ that social workers have. It also makes it less likely for other individuals to trust social workers. We have learnt that this is type of financial abuse.

we have learnt it is not appropriate to be under the influence at work. It is a concern that colleagues had noticed she had smelt like alcohol at work and even been in a vehicle collision at work. This would obviously impair her judgment as a social worker and also make the SU reluctant to trust her decision making abilities. Again, this reflects badly on her employer as they have not dealt with her alcohol abuse. this reflect on her as a person and shows she is unable to uphold a standard of self care.

While reading these articles I wondered how these social workers had found themselves in these positions which were so highly in breach of the standards they knew they had to uphold. It just shows that a social worker must be constantly mindful of their actions even years down the line from their engagement with the service user. Within my own practice I will learn to check each action against the professional standards, especially if my personal views are not aligned with them. I've learned that it can be an easy mistake to think that a minor breach of the rules is no breach at all, for example in the case of the ex-social worker being in contact with a service user from yeas ago. Having a chat may seem harmless but it clearly snowballed into a highly unprofessional situation that had legal ramifications. Professional boundaries could have stopped this before it had really started. Self care in my own practice will also be important as alcohol is an easily accessible tool for dealing with stress than can lead to a slippery slope of dependency.

Professionals should always follow practice and laws, and should understand the damaging affects of conflicts of interest. You should never respond, or just politely tell the service user that they will need to contact social services and that they cannot message you again.

It is a risk and could worsen the situation of the service user if they witness the service user drunk. The SW should never have continued or allowed discussions with the woman, by doing so he breached confidentiality. This is evidence of an abuse of power, also with the woman's mother as he allegedly had sexual contact which also is inappropriate which caused stress and psychological impact. The SW showed no regret of his actions and repeatedly broke professional boundaries with his suggestions. This case study does not evidence any practice of the professional standards.
