Why do you think this book is called “Color me Dark”?

I think this book is called “Color me Dark” because she is an African American, but her skin is very light. And she wants to be darker skinned than what she is right now. She also wants to be darker to be more like her best friend. People also “asked Lizzie Palmer if she was white, she’d always answer, “No, color me dark.” So since Nellie is so light she wishes she was darker to represent her culture. I know this because she said, “Daddy won’t stand for color talk, either.” Later she says, “Wouldn’t it be nice if everybody thought like Mama and Daddy?” She said this because she doesn’t like colored talk either.

How is the character felling in this part of the story?why?

I believe that Nellie lee love fell strong about equality for example when people make fun of her family about being dark skinned Nellie beats up kids but not adults I found this info in January 2 1919" I've beat up more girls and a few boys too for calling my sister names just beacaus she's dark but I can't fight grown ups who say hurtful things" so as you can see she is pretty stubborn about civil rights I think that Nellie is a strong girl on the inside and the out side for getting the courage to beat up kids and actually fight ing them so in conclusion I believe that Nellie is strong about equality

Why did Erma Jean stop taking? What really happened to Uncle Pace?

Erma Jean stopped talking because she was in complete shock of Uncle Pace dying. Or at least that’s what we thought. The last few minutes of Uncle Pace’s life Erma Jean was right with him. She heard every one of his last words. Based on our inference these words could be very shocking. Still she knows more than us. After the fact Erma Jean wouldn’t even bring up the subject with Nellie. The text staits on page 31-32, “When a knock comes in the early morning hours, it usually means trouble. Sheriff Bell and four men from the Corners brought in Uncle Pace. ‘He’s been bad hurt, Papa Till,’ the sheriff said. ‘Seems he got drunk and went to sleep on the railroad tracks and got hit by a train. That’s all I can figure.’”
And then it goes on to say that the strongest thing Uncle Pace ever drank was lemonade. This leads us to believe that Sheriff Bell is lying. Later in the text it staits, “ Pace was not run over by a train. I believe he was murdered. Terrible things are happening to returning soldiers all over. Some have been found beaten or hanged while still in their military uniforms. You all be very careful. Times are bad. Very bad.” Williams letter shows us that Sheriff Bell was lying for sure. This white sheriff is very close with this colored family. He knows them better than anyone else on the block. Sheriff Bell would have known that Uncle Pace doesn’t drink and where and when he would be coming home. This makes us feel that Bell was the cost to Pace’s death. Also we were terrified when we read the dread and horror of Erma Jean saw her Uncles body in a casket. Another thing is that I know that Erma Jean loves her uncle with all of her heart, but if he was in war all of the time for the army, how could she build a strong relationship with him? Who she had a strong relationship with was Bell. Nellie wasn’t there when Pace slipped away. Only Erma was. Like we said earlier Erma Jean did. She heard who killed him. If she found out that Sheriff Bell had committed this crime. That would give her enough shock to not be able to talk.

Where does the title Color Me Dark come?

The title Color me dark comes from Nellie’s great grandmother, Lizzie Palmer. Lizzie Palmer had been a slave. She did not have very dark skin like other colored people. After the war she often asked if she was white. But since she was still colored and the color of her skin didn’t matter to her she answered, Color Me Dark. This something that Nellie’s mother would’ve called smart mouthed. But it is not so rude when you think of the point that she is trying to give. She is trying to say something like, “If it really matters what color skin I have then you can just color me dark. If it really matters then you can treat me like I have darker skin. And then when she asks them if they will treat her the same because she is light skinned. Then all she has to answer with is exactly.” That proves a huge point on Lizzie’s part. As you can see when Nellie picks up this trait the text staits, “”

What is the theme of the story? What details help you to determine the theme?

I think one theme of “Color me Dark” is love. I think one theme is love because this is a diary, and she mostly talks about her family. And you love your family, also there is a lot going on with her family especially because they are African American. For example one family thing they do together is they run a family business, it’s a funeral home. I know this because on page 3 it said, “-and of course all the coffins for our family funeral business.” Also recently in the story their Uncle Pace died and the girls watched him die this impacted them a lot especially Erma Jean. I know this because on page 34 it says, “ Erma Jean hasn’t spoken since Uncle Pace died.” She hasn’t spoken because it has been really hard on her especially because she watched him die and she loved him very much.

How dose the author present the topic in an interesting way? Why?

I believe the author portrays the theme topic and tone in an interesting way because. She uses a diary the diary gives a unique perspective on the story. for example on page 78 6:00. " he gave daddy his number and told him to visit the bank. Daddy said he would but I don't care if we ever see mr.hill again." if this was written in a normal book you probably wouldn't have the perspective of Nellies felling about mr.hill. another pisce of exsample could be on page 6 January 2. " when whites people asked if Leslie palmer was white she'd always answer with color me dark. daddy won't stand for color talk." if this was written in a normal book the perspective would not be noted that nellies father hates color talk. So in conclusion the diary perspective changes the whole story.

I Know this beacause the text on page 64 it states, “Pace was not run over by a train. I believe he was murderd. Terrible things are happening to returning soldiers all over. Some have been found batten and hanged wile stil in there military uniforms. You all be vary careful. Times are bad! Vary bad!”. And yet on page 31 it said, “men from the Corners brought in Uncl Pace “he’s been bad hurt, Papa Till,” the sharif said. “Seems he got drunk and when to sleep on the rail road tracks and got hit”. Because there are two possibilities of his death we might not know.

What really happened to Uncle Pace?

Uncle Pace was murdered in a coach because there were no colored ones left. The white people found him and tried to kill him right there. He was left in the railroad tracks left to die. But Sheriff Bell found him in time to get him back to their house. As you can see the text staits on page126,” The night he died ,Uncle Pace told me what happened. He wanted us to know that he wasn’t drunk, and he hadn’t been hit by a train either. He took the local from Nashville to the Corners. There were no seats in the Colored car, so he sat in the whites only coach. When he reached the Corner several men got of with him. They beat him with sticks and rocks. Then they poured whiskey on him and lift him on the tracks, but he managed to pull himself of the tracks before the train moved. The men who did it got back on the train and left.” As you can see my inference earlier was somewhat correct. But only about the part where what Sheriff Bell told the, was incorrect.

The incident that started the Race riot of Chicago Illinois of 1919 was. A African American that drowned in Lake Michigan on July 27, 1919 after violating unofficial segregation rules/laws. I know this because on History.com The Chicago Race Riot it states that “On July 27, 1919, an African-American teenager drowned in Lake Michigan after violating the unofficial segregation of Chicago’s beaches and being stoned by a group of white youths. His death, and the police’s refusal to arrest the white man whom eyewitnesses identified as causing it, sparked a week of rioting between gangs of black and white Chicagoans, concentrated on the South Side neighborhood surrounding the stockyards. When the riots ended on August 3, 15 whites and 23 blacks had been killed and more than 500 people injured; an additional 1,000 black families had lost their homes when they were torched by rioters.” Also it states “The “Red Summer” of 1919 marked the culmination of steadily growing tensions surrounding the great migration of African Americans from the rural South to the cities of the North that took place during World War I. When the war ended in late 1918, thousands of servicemen returned home from fighting in Europe to find that their jobs in factories, warehouses and mills had been filled by newly arrived Southern blacks or immigrants.” This makes me feel, madnesses, torture, fear because how would you feel if your family got pulled apart some even died that’s how I feel.

Where does the story take place? Why is this important?

The year is 1919 the whole story. In the first part of the story they are in Tennessee. This is important because they are “colored”, because they are “colored” they don’t have as many rights. One example of this is the sheriff (sheriff Bell) didn’t allow “colors” to read or sell the newspaper. I know this because on page 27 it says, “- sheriff Bell came to her fathers barbershop and took out all of the Crisis magazines. He warned Mr.James not to be caught selling them anymore. Said that the magazines put out by anti American people who put foolish ideas into the minds of Coloreds.” But for the second half of the story they are in Chicago Illinois (still in the year 1919). In Chicago they had more freedom and more rights. This was important because they are now able to do more as “colored” people. One example is they saw a “colored” police officer. I know this because on page 97 it says, “On the way to the store, we met a colored police.” Another example is it was easier to get the newspaper. I know this because on page98 it says, “The Crisis came! Daddy didn’t have to sneak and buy it.”

Explain how the character feels about Uncle Paces death. Then, explain how this story would be different if it was told from another character’s point of view. Use two specific details from the story to support your answer.

Nellie was very confused and sad about what happened because what sheriff Bell said did not sound like something he would do so she was confused. This is from the text what sheriff Bell said on page 31-32, “ He’s been bad hurt, Papa Till,” the sheriff said. "Seems he got drunk and went to sleep on the railroad tracks and got hit by a train. Thats all I could figure." But they know is know that Uncle Pace doesn't drink so it confuses her. She is also upset because Erma Jean stopped talking from the impact of Uncle Paces death. I know this because on page 34 it says, "Erma Jean hasn't spoken since Uncle Pace died." But if this story was written in Erma's point of view we would know the truth why she stooped talking, and the truth what happened to Uncle Pace sooner, because she does tell but not until later in the story. I know she began to talk later on in the story because on page 125 it says, "Then deep from within Erma came a scream that stopped us all in our tracks. And for the first time since February, Erma Jean Love spoke words."

This means that people who know more about other cultures instead of assuming things will not be violent. One example of someone doing this was in January Sparrow when Sadie (“colored”) said that she was a runaway, Polly (white) responded, “That ain’t no bother to me, Sadie. You’ll always be my best friend in the whole world.” And an example of people with no knowledge is the 1919 riot. Also how Uncle Pace died (he was murdered by whites.) I know he was murdered by whites because on page 126 Erma Jean says, “There were no seats in the colored car, so he sat in the whites only coach. When he was floating, he didn’t realize he was going into the whites only section. Many off the whites were not happy about this and they started throwing rocks and starting fights. Eugene did not mean any harm, but was killed from this incident. Police officers were trying to calm everyone down, but one of the colored police officers, Big Wally, was killed too. This riot wasn’t like anything Nellie Lee Love had ever seen before.

What is the story mainly about?

I my opinion the story Color Me Dark is mostly about fighting for yourself and others who are in the same of different boat than you. I think this because in the story the main character is a colored person. Her family reads the Crisis. The Crisis is a magazine I on the latest news that can have to do with the Civil Rights Movement. Also the family goes to Open Mind classes, where they talk to the colored children and parents about how they are perfect just the way they are. One more reason why this story is mainly about fighting for freedom is that during the riot everyone was decent themselves and becoming themselves. I know that the Love family will stand up because the text staits, “I’m going out. And if I die, at least I know that I was defending my family.” That was Freeman Love. (Nellie’s father.) there is a reason why he was named Freeman. He will stand up to be a free man. That is why I think that the book is mostly about defending yourself and fighting for your own freedom.
