Use playdough or modeling clay to create words in specific phonemes of consonant sounds. This activity can be differentiated by having struggling learners practice a selected amount of consonant sounds. For advanced learners, they will be able to create sight words.

Sorting activity- for the short and long vowel sounds in words there will be images cut out and the students will have to say the word and sort them to the correct short, long vowel sound. For struggling learners, they will be only working with the short vowel sounds. For more advanced learners, they will move to digraphs.

Word family eggs- get plastic eggs and on one half write the word family on the bottom then have them match the egg top and bottom to make the full word. For struggling learners, this exercise is great because it allows them to pick from a selected portion of word families. I will determine which word family they need to work on the most.

Scavenger hunt of sight words- print out sight words and hide them around the classroom. I will say the word the students have to find it and then write it. To differentiate this assignment, I will display more advanced words in the classroom for those that know more words than the rest of the class.
