Lewis<br>Publication: 2012<br>Genre: Fiction<br>Interest Level: PreK-2<br>Text Level: 2-3 grade<br>Teaser: Maya is the new girl in school, but Chloe and her friends do not want to play with her because she is different. Maya wears hand-me downs and plays with old fashion toys. Every time Maya tried to Join Chloe and her friends they gang up on her. Maya eventually decided to play alone and she stops showing up to school altogether. Then the teacher gives a lesson on small acts of kindness, this is when Chloe feels upset about how she treated Maya.  <br>Teaching Idea: Do a lesson similar to the one the teacher did in the book. Have the students find out things that they all have in common and then have them make a poster. It will involve all students, but teach a greater lesson on how in the end we all share similarities, therefore we should all treat each other with kindness and respect. <br><br></div>]]></description>

This tune will be stuck in your head after listening to it!<br>Teaching Idea:&nbsp;<br>Have the students listen to the song. Then have the students draw a picture of them and their best friend. Then have them write three words that describe their best friend. EX: Caring, Loving, Trusting.</div>]]></description>

When Rabbit launches his toy airplane (with Mouse in the pilot seat at takeoff) and it gets stuck in a tree, he convinces his friend that he will come up with a plan to get it down. He does so by stacking animals on top of one another (beginning with an elephant and a rhinoceros) until they are within reach of the toy.<br>Teaching Idea: <a href="http://www.scholastic.com/">Scholastic.com</a> has a k-1 lesson plan for mathematics and number sequencing using <em>My Friend Rabbit</em>. Their one- and two-word exchanges on each spread lead to a tentative offer of friendship, sealed as both boys jump high in the air and yell Yow!<br>Teaching Idea: Read the book as if there was no punctuation (ie: no inflection in your voice that would indicate a question or an exclamation) and then read it with the proper inflection in your voice to match the punctuation. Then discuss with the class how readers must "read" punctuation as well as words and adjust your voice appropriately to help convey meaning. <br><br></div>]]></description>

After Chester and Wilson get past their initial distrust, they discover that they have things in common with Lilly, have fun introducing each other to new things, and ultimately end up being great friends.<br>Teaching Idea: The author uses many different words that students may not know (“diagonally,” “miniature,” “swung,” and “reminded”). I think it would be good to go over these words after the story and then have students use these words on a take home worksheet with a crossword puzzle. This will help students expand their vocabulary. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The kids I know are really neat<br>One's named Sue and One's named Pete,<br>Some of them are big and round<br>Some I know are upside down!<br><br>I know some kids, black and white,<br>Some are sad and some are bright,<br>Some are short and some are tall.<br>There are those, but that's not all!<br><br>I knew a polka dotted kid!<br>You think I'm kidding, but I did!<br>I knew a green kid for a day!<br>But, her green went away!<br><br>Teaching Idea: After reading and discussing this poem, I will have the students get a piece of paper and draw themselves and two of their friends. Then when everyone is done each student will share with the class the drawing and how their friends are different from them. </div>]]></description>
