This underground network that helped the enslaved people escape was first organized by a group of people called the Quakers. This key fact is important in understanding the Underground Railroad because the Quakers were in one sense, the pioneers for the Underground Railroad. They were also a specific type of religious group that thought that all people were equal, even women, which is why they've come to help the black slaves. By acquiring information about the Quakers, one will be able to understand more easily about how this movement (The Underground Railroad) has come to occur and exist.

During the time period when the Underground Railroad helped enslave black slaves escape to the border states, the South started developing laws like the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 which allowed the capturing and returning of runaway slaves. This key information is very important in understanding the Underground Railroad because this shows the difference of how Southern states were much more harsh and racist, allowing slavery while the North was willing to get rid of slavery. Since the South had more plantations and the North had factories, labor was needed most at the plantations thus calling for slaves, helping explain why slavery exists, and why such movements like the Underground Railroad has developed.

George Washington, yes THE George Washington himself owned slaves and even complained in 1786 about the Underground Railroad and that the Quakers were trying to free his slaves.

The reason that white people were helping out the Blacks and not the Blacks revolting themselves was because education for the Black was actually illegal in some Southern states because the Southerners knew that if the Blacks were educated, they would start to get together and rebel as they learn and think more. (For e.g. develop something similar to the Underground Railroad)
