Bushido was intended to help Japan and its people but instead worked against them in World War 2.
When Japan reformed its government and the military became more significant, bushido began influencing the lives and thoughts of everyone in Japan. hey had strong belief of dying for their country or emperor and faith in their country, as 12 year old school girl Yoshitaka Kojima said "the first thing our teacher said was Japan started the war against America and ....(risen?), all of us were so excited, clapping our hands with joy . When the U.S. invaded Japans outer ring, they weren't educated and were surprised by Japans ferociousness. They acted according to 8 virtues:

Eight virtues of Bushido (as envisioned by Nitobe Inazo)

The Bushido code is typified by eight virtues:

Righteousness (義 gi)
Courage (勇 yū)
Benevolence (仁 jin)
Respect (礼 rei)
Sincerity (誠 makoto)
Honour (名誉 meiyo)
Loyalty (忠義 chūgi)
Self-Control (自制 jisei)

The Bushido code led millions and millions of young men (and as a result women and children) to their deaths, many on suicide missions. he bushido prevented them from adopting new tactics and strategies. At the battle of Iwo Jima the Japanese fought even though they knew they would lose, their general told them to kill ten U.S. soldiers before they themselves die or else they were dishonourable.

"Sir: The learned Japanese Inazo Nitobe, in comparing christianity with his country's code of honour, which is its best substitute for a relligion, says, inter alia:“If history can teach us anything, the State built on martial virtues—be it a city

like Sparta or an empire like Rome—can never make on earth a continuing city. The history of the world confirms the prophecy that ‘the meek shall inherit the earth.’ A nation that sells it birthright of peace and backslides from the front

rank of industrialism into the file of filibusterism makes a very poor bargain indeed!” Verily “a prophet

is not without honour save in his own country.” An article written for The Argus published on the 25th of march 1942 by "J.smith" first gives a brief comment showing his (and many others) perspective on bushido, he is degrading Japan's "best substitute for a religion".People at the time in Japan strongly believed and honoured this code while country's mocked them.
The rest of the article is a quote from Inazo Nitobe, it is not possible to make a continuing city and it is wrong for "a nation to sell its birthright of peace" etc... I think he is trying to justify the bushido code for western world, he is also saying the bushido code stands for peace etc...
"A "Times" correspondent explains the underlying motive that inspires the deeds of valour in the Japanese soldier... Take the average scheme of life of the average society of the west, and bushido, as nearly, as may be, represents its exact antithesis. Bushido offers us the ideal of poverty instead of wealth, humility in place of ostentation, self sacrifice in place of selfishness... Bushido inspires ardent courage an the refusal to turn the back upon the enemy, it looks death calmly in the face"

This article was written for The Sydney Morning Herald and published on wednesday the 21st of december 1904, this is a very different perspective, showing the difference between the western habits and Japans opposites. It idolises The virtues of life in Japan.

Text at the bottom of the image shows General Yamashita's statement that prisoners would be treated according to the Japanese honour code of bushido. Yamashita was later hanged for war crimes. This image is blatantly saying they will be mindless and cruel in the treatment of prisoners. Thousands and thousands of Japanese would be found guilty of war crimes against civilians and prisoners of war, the most prolific mass killing was the Nanking Massacre in which an estimated 40000 to 300000 were murdered.

The legacy of the samurai definitely lives on although because of modern times samurai just means a ninja with a sword. After the Meiji restoration Many samurai became doctors and educators and brought the way of life with them. Bushido's most tragic legacy is the propaganda used to encourage and sustain the Japanese soldier before and during World War II. The spirit of the Hagakure incited young Japanese soldiers to become kamikaze suicide pilots. The military's actions resulted in the atomic bombing of two cities and destroying the lives of the Japanese.
