Tom's left hand was caught in the cotton gin

and he was crippled, he has three children and has worked for Mr. Deas for eight years. Tom is compassionate and hard-working. He even sympathizes with Mayella as he has seen her suffering every day he passed the Ewell household. Tom speaks about the impossible situation that Mayella put him in when she hugged and kissed him. Being black he couldn't push her away forcibly and running away seemed the only choice and it made him look guilty. Despite his innocence, and his identity as an upright citizen, the jury decides against him because of he belongs to a particular race. Tom knows that the law would not be fair and he would be persecuted once again. Thus Tom takes the law into his hands and runs toward the fence only to be shot dead .

Arthur Radley(Boo) is an interesting character in the novel. He is the youngest son of the Radley family. He lives with his family near the Finch Family. He is so isolated and mostly all the time in the house. There are strange stories and fearful gossip that the children have heard from the older people in the neighborhood. Some say that he was a polite young man, but he made minor mistakes when he was a teenager and then his father mistreated him and locked him in the house. Boo is never seen in person till the end of the novel. When it was Halloween night which gave him the chance to show the children his true personality as a caring person and not a scary one. In the novel, his character symbolizes the town's intolerance, inequality, and slavery. His character does not change, but the way how the children think of him changes when they realize that he is a nice person when he protects them from the dangerous attack by Bob Ewell.

Calpurnia is the Finch family's cook and a motherly figure to Scout. She's one of the few literate black residents in Maycomb and takes Scout to church, where they learn about racial differences. Calpurnia's strictness earns the children's respect, she is the lens or the window through which the children get to know the black community by knowing her and she teaches Scout valuable life lessons. Thanks to her church connections, they get to watch the trial from the colored section of the balcony.

Jeremy Atticus Finch, "Jem," He is the older brother of the protagonist, Scout Finch, and the son of Atticus Finch, the central figure in the story. Jem is depicted as a thoughtful and adventurous young boy who experiences significant growth and maturation throughout the novel, particularly in his understanding of morality and justice as he witnesses the racism and injustice prevalent in their society, especially during the trial of Tom Robinson.
