Unconditional Love

Unconditional love is an important theme in The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Despite their hardships, Jeannette and her siblings continue to love their parents, even when they struggle to take care of them. Their mother, Rose Mary, believes that children should be independent, but Jeannette still longs for her affection. Her father, Rex, often makes promises he cannot keep, yet Jeannette admires his intelligence and dreams. Even when Rex’s drinking causes problems, Jeannette holds onto the good memories they share. The Walls children support and care for each other no matter what happens. As they grow older, they realize that love does not mean ignoring mistakes but accepting people as they are. The Glass Castle shows that unconditional love can exist even in difficult and imperfect families. “I wanted to let the world know that no matter what Dad had done and how hard he had made our lives, I was still his daughter and he was still my father.” This quote is great example of Unconditional love because she was always caring for Rex but she wouldn't always do something for him to be better but she always loved him. The picture I used was a good example of unconditional love because the picture portrays a younger women showing care to an older homeless person like how Jeannette Walls shows to her parents when they move to New York.

Loyalty

Loyalty is a strong theme in The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Jeannette stays loyal to her father, Rex, even when he breaks his promises and struggles with alcoholism. She believes in his dreams, like building the Glass Castle, even when others doubt him. The Walls children are also deeply loyal to each other, protecting one another from hunger, bullies, and their parents' neglect. Lori, Brian, and Jeannette work together to escape to New York, showing their loyalty by helping each other succeed. Even after leaving, Jeannette feels torn between her new life and her love for her parents. Despite everything, she continues to visit them and worries about their well-being. The Glass Castle shows that loyalty is complicated but can bring people together even in tough times. “I told Mom and Dad that I would never lose faith in them, and I promised myself I never would.” This is an example of loyalty because she promised she would never give up on her parents even though Rex and Rose Mary have put theirs kids through so much and created trauma. This picture is a great example of loyalty becuase any type of military has to have loyalty for each other to trust them as well with their lives.

Parental Neglect

Parental neglect is a major theme in The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Jeannette and her siblings often go hungry because their parents refuse to keep steady jobs. Their mother, Rose Mary, prioritizes her art over feeding her children, even when they have no food. Their father, Rex, spends money on alcohol instead of providing for the family. The children have to take care of themselves, finding food in trash cans and learning to survive on their own. Despite their struggles, Jeannette and her siblings still love their parents and hope they will change. As they grow older, they realize they can no longer rely on them. They make the difficult decision to leave and build better lives for themselves. The Glass Castle shows how neglect can shape a person but also how resilience can help them overcome it.“I would find half-eaten sandwiches in the garbage can and take them into the bathroom and eat them in privacy.” This quote is a good example of parental neglect becuase Jeannette had to scavenge to eat and no kid should ever experience this. I used this picture because Jeannette was burned making hot dogs because her clothes caught fire and she had to spend a couple days in the Hospital.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is an important theme in The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Despite the neglect and hardships they face, Jeannette and her siblings continue to love their parents. Jeannette forgives her father, Rex, even though he breaks his promises and struggles with alcoholism. She remembers the good times they shared, like when he taught her about the stars. Even though her mother, Rose Mary, refuses to take responsibility for their struggles, Jeannette still visits and cares for her. Brian, Lori, and Jeannette learn that forgiving does not mean forgetting but accepting their parents for who they are. When Rex is dying, Jeannette spends time with him, showing that she still loves him. She realizes that holding onto anger will not change the past. The Glass Castle teaches that forgiveness can bring peace, even in difficult relationships. “You should never hate anyone, even your worst enemies. Everyone has something good about them. You have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that.” This is a great quote by Rosemary and shows she forgives a lot of people. I liked this picture it shows how the kids feel and how they forgive and love each other to become a family.

Fantasy vs Reality

In The Glass Castle, fantasy and reality are constantly in conflict, especially within the Walls family. Rex Walls fills his children’s heads with grand dreams, like the promise of building a magical Glass Castle, but in reality, they live in poverty and struggle to survive. Jeannette and her siblings often believe in their father’s dreams, but as they grow older, they start to see the truth. Their mother, Rose Mary, also lives in fantasy, choosing to focus on art instead of providing food for her children. Reality hits hard when the children realize they must take care of themselves because their parents won’t. Despite knowing the truth, Jeannette still holds onto love for her father and his dreams, even though she knows the Glass Castle will never be built. Eventually, she chooses reality by leaving home and creating a stable life for herself. The book shows how dreams can be both a source of hope and a painful illusion."We threw rocks at the foundation we had dug, because we knew the Glass Castle was never going to be built." This quote is good is perfect for this theme because it portray how Rex would fill the kids heads up with a fantasy land of this house but they never got to it they just needed to " Find Gold". This image portrays a good example of how Jeannette thought life would be like from how her dad talked but as she got older she realized what situation they are in and none of the things will ever happen that he said.

Broken Promises

In The Glass Castle, broken promises are a big part of Jeannette Walls' childhood. Her father, Rex Walls, often makes grand promises but never follows through. One of his biggest broken promises is the Glass Castle, a beautiful home he swears he will build for the family but never does. Instead of keeping his word, he spends money on alcohol and gambling, leaving the family struggling. Jeannette also believes him when he says he will stop drinking, but he always falls back into his old habits. Her mother, Rose Mary, also makes empty promises, like saying she will get a job to help the family but then refusing to work. Over time, Jeannette and her siblings realize they cannot trust their parents' words. These broken promises hurt them, but they also push Jeannette to take control of her own life. In the end, she learns that she must rely on herself instead of waiting for promises that will never be kept. This picture is a good example of broken promises because Rex would make so many but not hold part of the promise up and let down the kids."It’s time I got a job… Then a few days later, she announced that she had no intention of working for a living." Rose Mary frequently claims she will help provide for the family but ultimately refuses, leaving her children to fend for themselves.
