You have been superheroes in how you are keeping your students safe. Try to think of the last time you did something just for you. Respecting and caring for others begins with respecting and caring for yourself. You can't pour from an empty cup and you can't give people your best when you are burnt out. We're often uncomfortable setting boundaries because we don't want to disappoint anyone. When we make healthy choices and establish boundaries, we're more resilient.

December 4, 2020
We all know the benefits of physical activity. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week for adults, or a combination of both. Currently many of us have had to change the way we stay physically active. Our fitness classes or team sports may be on hold, we may not feel comfortable visiting the gym. With a bit of creative thinking we can stay active in new ways throughout our current restrictions. Here is a guide from the WHO to Stay physically active during self-quarantine. Next week, Mel will be hosting a 20-30 minute Yoga session (Beginner Yoga by Adriene on YouTube) in the gym afterschool on Thursday (3:00 PM). No experience necessary. Bring comfy clothes and a yoga mat (if you have one, if not no problem you can use a gym mat).

Set a small wellness goal for yourself to help you keep an eye trained on the possibilities this new year holds for us. I think there is a lot to be hopeful for.

March 5, 2021
During our upcoming PD on March 12, we will be taking time to better understand Land-Based Learning and how to build this knowledge into our practice. Research shows that Land-Based or outdoor learning can improve student achievement as well as mental and physical well-being. The same is true for adults. Nature-based mindfulness practices have positive effects on mental, physical, and social health for us as adults. As you spend more time outdoors yourself, you become a better champion for Mother Nature. Studies also show that a child needs only one nature champion in their life to become a lifetime steward of the land. Now that the weather is improving, take some for yourself outside.

March 19, 2021
Dr. Astrid Kendrick from the University of Calgary recently presented her research on emotional labour, compassion fatigue and stress at the System Leadership Meeting. Working in the Alberta public school system demands emotional labour from teachers, school leaders and other education workers. The impact of providing emotional labour is not well understood in the field of education. Her findings showed that nearly all education workers are providing some form of emotional support to students or staff dealing with trauma or to those in crisis. This is impacting the well-being of those providing care. Dr. Kendrick outlines her holistic framework around creating HEARTcare plans to ensure a network of support is in place for educational workers in her article found at the asebp SANDBOX - Pandemic Teaching is More Than Keeping Your Head Above the Muddy Waters.

Dr. Kendrick also highlighted some resources for further reading:

Emotional labor

Seminal book: The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling by Arlie Hochschild (1983, 2012)

Greater focus on domestic responsibilities: Fed Up: Emotional labor, Women, and The Way Forward by Gemma Hartley

Compassion Fatigue

Seminal book: Compassion Fatigue: Coping with Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder by Charles Figley (1995)

Workbooks:

Overcoming Compassion Fatigue: A Practical Resilience Workbook by Martha Teater and John Ludgate (2014)

The Compassion Fatigue Workbook (2012) by Francoise Matthieu

Overcoming Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in Schools by Alison Dubois and Molly Mistretta (2018)

May 14, 2021
Plunging into another round of on-line learning has caused, for many, another disparity in work-life balance. It is important to recognize this and be effortful in shifting the fulcrum. Saying yes to you is essential for your health—a “need to do,” not a “nice to do.” To help you do that more regularly, here are some self-care ideas you can practice:

Eat a healthy meal: Try new recipes and take the time to relax and enjoy mealtimes.

Exercise: Check out a virtual class, go for a walk with a friend or try a new sport (don't forget to track your fitness challenge participation for a chance to win!)

Be kind to yourself: Respect yourself and give yourself the same compassion you give others.

Sleep: Have a bedtime routine and get to bed early.

Prioritize: Schedule meaningful activities for yourself in your day.

Laugh: Find humour in your everyday life. Laughter makes us feel good!

Set boundaries: Setting healthy personal and emotional boundaries helps ensure you only take on what you feel you can handle.

Remember: There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to self-care—only you can find the fit that’s right for you!

June 4, 2021
This week has been one of shock, mourning, and contemplation for many of us as we join others in honouring the 215 children lost at the former Kamloops Residential School. Tragedies can sometimes leave us feeling vulnerable and unsure of what to do next. Dr. Ungar tells us that taking some type of action can positively affect our sense of well-being and improve our resiliency in situations like this. We've been highly supported by our Board with ways to move forward with our students. It has been humbling to see what staff have already taken up with students this week, thank you. Our Mayor recently put up a moving post urging Calgarians to take action, providing almost a dozen links to various organizations. If you find yourself continuing to feel unsettled by this tragedy, take some time to consider what action you can take personally. Perhaps reading through the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, or donating to a cause that supports survivors. You can find some links in Nenshi's Facebook post.

The demands of winding up the school year require so much of us and it can be easy to lose sight of maintaining balance. In the coming weeks remember that carve out some time for yourself. Remember that if you don't take care of yourself first you can't take care of those that depend on you and you can't take care of those other end-of-school priorities. This article from Homewood Health provides some tips for prioritizing yourself to find a healthy work-life balance. Note, you may need to create an account for Homeweb. If you haven't done so already take a moment to sign up, there are many great resources within the application.

We all know play is crucial for a child’s development, but play is also necessary for adults. Play can add joy to life, relieve stress, supercharge learning, and connect you to others and the world around you. Play can also make work more productive and pleasurable. There is research that highlights the Benefits of Play for Adults. This idea is getting traction in many professional circles. According to Brené Brown, creativity, play, and rest are wholehearted behaviors that will promote a healthy mind and body. Approaching the holiday season can be a great time to think about, share and plan ways to make time for a little fun. What are your favorite family/friend fun games? We will be compiling a list on the Wellness Connection Bulletin Board.

"You will find ways to create a calmer home environment and pick up stress-busting strategies you can use as a family. There is a focus on techniques that help children and adults feel more in control of their feelings, thoughts and actions. And focus on your own well-being, so you have the internal resources to try and keep stress at bay, and to help restore a sense of balance when stressors hit."

Self Care/Joy - We would like to acknowledge that each of you have given so much these past 7 weeks (has it really been 7 weeks!?!). The collective exhaustion is palpable and we know the cost of giving so much of yourselves is taking a toll. This Wellness Sandbox article on self-care points out that sometimes, "being told to simply make room for self-care can make people feel their hard work is unrecognized and physical and emotional exhaustion overlooked. For those who are already feeling down, framing self-care as a “quick-and-easy” solution may inadvertently make people feel like they are at fault for not bouncing back after what was truly a tough year. And it was a phenomenally difficult year." Despite this, practicing self-care is still an effective way to give yourself a little boost. I would like to spruce up our Wellness Connection bulletin board near the staffroom with pictures that bring us joy. Please send me a photo of something that contributes to your well-being and brings you joy. I'll print them and create a collage to spread some joy, let us get to know each other a bit better, and maybe even give us some ideas of a new self-care practice to try.

Intentions – Jody Carrington's latest blog post discusses the difference between intentions and resolution/goal setting. She highlights that shifting your focus to setting an intention moves our thinking away from what we are lacking to what we already have. Making this shift takes practice but it can be very powerful and is a habit of the mind that can help align your day to day decisions and interactions with the values that are important to you. If you are new to intentions, this Intention Setting 101 post by Melissa Eisler is a quick read and even has some intentions you can "borrow." The first one she lists is find balance, what a great place to start.

When it comes to setting your goals, don’t overlook the basics for a healthy routine. This article from Lumio Health has a number of excellent links to help you personalize your goals for a healthy New Year. One way to keep yourself accountable is to share your goal(s) with someone else. I went to Staples and got myself a shiny new planner to start a health and wellness journal for myself. This week my goal was to get 8 hours of sleep each night. What will you do to ensure you keep your sanity? It will be important that we all intentionally attend to our wellness over the coming weeks and months, as well as look out for each other. I encourage you to share a goal with someone. If someone shares with you, check in on them periodically to see how they are doing. Together, we are stronger.
