• Formal tone, because speaking to a general public means different people whether it's friends, government officals, teachers and mentors, which requires a formal tone and advance level of language

Conventions:

• Starts with a headline ( title of report) which has to be interesting to captivate the attention of the readers

• Under it should be the byline, which includes: date, place and the author who wrote it, proving more information that helps understand more the events discussed in the report

• A lead, or hook that includes the 5 W's

• Explanatory paragraph, explaining the event or whatever the report should be talking about in detail

• A wrap up, concluding the report ending in a quote or catchy phrase

General public :  News reports are not targeting a specific audience, it can be

2. Purpose

To inform : the main goal or purpose of a news report is to inform people about a certain event, objectively.  Sometimes the purpose can be to engage , as the headlines are usually designed to capture the attention of the reader. 

3. Language & Register

Formal & neutral tone : Avoids slang, personal opinions, or any emotional language. 

Objective : Uses third-person pronouns ( "he," "she," "they") and avoids "I" or "we."

The language must be as Concise and clear as possible. Such as  Short sentences, and straightforward vocabulary.

4. Key Conventions of a News Report

Headline  : Short, seek the attention and summarize the main point.

Byline : The journalist’s name and sometimes their position 

Lead (1st paragraph) : Answers the 5 Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How) in a clear  way. HAS THE HOOK THAT CAPTURES THE READER’S ATTENTION 

Body paragraphs :Provide details in order of importance (inverted pyramid structure).

Quotes & sources: Includes statements from experts, to  add credibility.

Factual accuracy :Information must be verified and is not based on bias.

No personal opinions : Journalists avoid inserting their own views.

Past tense : Reports events that have already happened.

Short paragraphs : Easy to read and scan.
