Hello everyone!

I am excited to welcome you to the English for Communication course! I cannot wait to share my knowledge and experiences with you. Let me introduce myself. I am from Panama and currently live in the beautiful city of Santiago. I bring a wealth of knowledge from my academic journey, having earned three Master's degrees from the University of Panama, the University of Louisville, and UNACHI.

One of the most memorable moments in my teaching career was a communicative activity I taught in the Technical English course at Panama University. My students brought creativity to life by transforming our classroom into an art museum! They used technical vocabulary to describe the art pieces they posted on the walls, making the atmosphere feel like a real museum. It was an unforgettable experience, seeing everyone so engaged and pleased.

When I'm not in the classroom, you can find me traveling. I love exploring new places and catching up with friends along the way. So far, I have visited Costa Rica, Mexico, Cuba, the United States, Canada, England, Holland, and China. Each trip has been a fantastic adventure, and it has given me a deep appreciation for the diversity of our world. I look forward to sharing these experiences with you.

I am delighted to embark on this learning journey with you and am filled with anticipation for the successes we'll achieve together this semester. Let's make it memorable and successful!

The video highlights essential techniques for improving communication in professional settings, particularly for non-native English speakers. The discussion between Lisa and Alex emphasizes five key areas:

Pacing: Speaking too quickly can confuse listeners and make the speaker seem nervous. To avoid this, it's recommended to speak at a moderate pace, emphasize keywords, and pause at the end of sentences to let the message sink in.

Volume: Adjust your volume based on the room size and audience. In large spaces, projecting your voice ensures clarity, while in smaller settings, a slightly elevated conversational volume suffices. For those who speak softly, visualizing a volume knob and turning it up a few notches can be helpful.

Gesturing: Effective gestures enhance communication. Aim to gesture about once or twice per sentence, using small, controlled movements to convey enthusiasm and avoid appearing stiff or robotic.

Body Language: Confident body language, such as maintaining eye contact, keeping your chin up, and shoulders back, helps convey confidence, even if you feel nervous. Standing confidently can also improve your self-perception over time.

Message Structure: Organize your message with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion, ensuring clarity and conciseness, especially in professional settings.

These strategies can help us more effectively and confidently in various professional scenarios.

In this video, the speaker offers five essential tips for improving communication in a professional English-speaking environment, with insights from Alex Lyon, a seasoned communication coach and college professor with over 20 years of experience.

First, focus on pacing and speak at a moderate speed, emphasizing the last few words of your sentences and pausing briefly afterward to enhance clarity and composure. Second, adjust your volume according to the room size; raise it in larger spaces and keep it just above the conversational level in smaller settings. Third, incorporate gestures to bring life to your message. Aim to gesture once or twice per sentence using small, natural movements. This will make you appear more animated and engaged without being distracting.

Next, ensure your body language exudes confidence. Stand with your chin up, and shoulders back, and maintain eye contact. This posture not only projects confidence but also fosters self-assurance. Finally, organize your message with a clear structure, when communicating, start with an introduction to outline your points, then cover each point in the body, and conclude by summarizing what you said. This structure helps you stay on track and ensures your message is clear.

The video provides techniques that help improve communication whether in a professional setting or for non-native English speakers. Pausing at the end of sentences and emphasizing important words is a good way to convey the message clearly and calmly. Adjust your speaking volume to match the size of the room and people in it. A slightly raised conversational tone is sufficient in larger spaces, while projecting your voice ensures clarity. Increasing the volume knob and visualizing it can help those who speak softly. Maintaining eye contact, keeping your chin up, and standing with your shoulders back show confidence, even if you're feeling nervous inside. Gestures convey enthusiasm and authenticity in communication, avoiding stiffness or robotic movements, when used sparingly. Over time, practicing a confident posture contributes positively to self-perception. Communicating with a clear start, cohesive body, and concise end promotes clarity and professionalism in professional interactions.

Effective communication is crucial in any professional setting, and mastering the nuances of delivery can make a significant impact. One key aspect is pacing; speaking too quickly can overwhelm listeners and project nervousness. A moderate pace with deliberate pauses at the end of sentences allows the audience to fully grasp the message. Volume control is equally important, as it ensures clarity. Adjusting your voice according to the room size and audience helps maintain engagement, with softer speakers benefiting from consciously amplifying their voice. Gesturing also plays a vital role in enhancing communication. By using small, controlled gestures once or twice per sentence, you can convey enthusiasm without appearing stiff. Body language, such as maintaining eye contact and a confident posture, reinforces your message and helps build trust with the audience. Lastly, structuring your message with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion ensures that your communication is both clear and concise, which is essential in professional environments. Together, these elements create a more effective and engaging communication style that resonates with audiences.
