Monsters in Media by Matthew Espey

I am focusing on the idea of monsters within both literature and in media. For examples, books like Beowulf, and Monster. However, there are also popular movies like King Kong and Godzilla. So, what makes a monster? Can it be a person, a thing, or an idea?

This source depicts a song titled Nightmare written and composed by Park Jihyo. The song is about a person being stalked by her, and how they should run home quickly. Yet they can't escape, as she is a nightmare. This song is very catchy, so it could latch onto students senses easier if they can find a song they enjoy listening to. Written through his diary entries, Steve must try to prove he is not guilty any means possible. Even gone as far as being called a monster.

Many consider children innocent and sweet, but can that be said for Yummy? During a gang initiation Yummy shot at someone but accidentally killed a young girl in the process, now Yummy finds himself on the run. After trying to seek help from the gang he was looking to impress, Yummy finds himself in a world of trouble. I feel like it's important for students to look at the social and economic problems in our country, so they see why younger children are turning to a life of crime. Especially if students come from a more privileged area. Is Yummy a real monster, or was he led astray?

Capshaw, K. (2018). Fractured innocence in G.

Hotel Transylvania follows hundreds of years old Dracula and his daughter, Mavis. In this movie all of the monsters come for Mavis's birthday party, from Frankenstein, to wolves, and to a colossal giant. Ironically enough despite all of this, humans are actually viewed as monsters after they killed Dracula's wife. I feel like this movie is important to show students, because it shows that humans in the long run can be viewed as monsters by other species.

Tartakovsky, G. (Director). In this classic movie, they explore the theme of monster with Frankenstein and his monster. I feel like this would be appropriate to show my students a clip of the video to expose them to different kinds of monsters in media, even classical ones such as this movie.

Whale, J.
