Poetic devices:
Students seem to remember little of what they learned last year. They had some knowledge of simile and metaphor, but we had to completely refresh the concept of poetic devices all together.
Figurative language has been a struggle for them, as well as, metaphors within the language. They seem to do well with identifying the literal meanings, but struggle a little bit with decoding what the author might be trying to say figuratively.
Writing:
Students have been developing new writing skills this year so far and are just beginning to grasp formatting and structures of writing. there seems to be a huge gap in how to structure a sentence or where to start on the page. We are continually working on these structures and our penmanship.
Students can rely on their prior knowledge of simile, metaphor, rhyming, and literation to guide them into this unit.

2 Ell students: one reads on his own, but needs clarification on wording and direction. When writing, he will flip words and miss key words that help make the sentence flow. I find that he benefits more when I slightly guide him and then go over his writings in the end when his ideas are out. That way he focuses on one thing at a time and can really absorb the grammatical errors.
My other ELL needs help with reading and understanding direction often. She struggles when their is independent or partner reading and needs clarification on directions for independent works. Once she understands, she is able to work on her own.
Other students are able to read on their own with little need for clarification and can decode words.

Often during class discussion, students will have their own perspective to add. I find it is helpful at times for others to hear what their friends think and how they may view a concept.
Student may share what they remember form previous years and give others a different perspective.

Students have read and written poems in 3rd grade on a smaller scope.
We often relate these poems to songs we may hear, music our parents listen to, the radio, or books we have read. Students are able to make connections in all areas.
I do see this a lot in our discussions which have been particularly helpful in this unit so far. The students hear connections that their classmates make and it helps them understand the concepts.
When we discussed anaphora, students had to use figurative language to write a poem about themselves.
Students were able to make connections to their interests. For example, one student really likes basketball so we discussed him using figurative language to compare himself to Kobe Bryant.

Students use chromebooks when we type final products. We also utilize our school site by doing walks around to observe different aspects and activities at our school that we could then go and write about in a poem. Students have text to word and word to text assistance for those who need extra support through our LA curriculum. This technology can be used at home as well as at school. Some of my students also have pull out and push in support during this time.
