This book tells the story of a real father and daughter who belong to the Sikh religion. This story talks about how both the father and daughter wear buns, as neither of them cut their hair due to tradition. The book is diverse because it tells a real story about a specific aspect of Sikh culture. It showcases that this aspect of Sikh culture can be celebrated instead of considered different in a bad way.

One thing that stood out to me was its ability to talk about complex racial issues digestibly for young children.
Lover Boy (Juanito el cariñoso)

I read this book in our class today and I really enjoyed it. It is a bilingual counting book in both English and Spanish that teaches kids numbers while also following the story of a sweet affectionate boy named Johnny/Juanito who loves to give hugs and kisses to his family. This book is diverse since it portrays a Hispanic family that speaks both Spanish and English and it also gives readers a glimpse into the family’s culture. For example, for many Americans the idea of kissing and hugging your family members and other friends as a regular greeting is a little unusual and not something as common as say, a handshake, but in this book kisses and hugs are a pretty normal way of showing love or simply just saying hi to your friends and family. I like this book because the message is really sweet while also showing readers a family dynamic that might be different from their own.

The texts walks the reader through all the ways that this dish represents their people and tribes throughout North America. The book is culturally diverse because it shows all the different ways that Native American people can be represented. It depicts some of the oral traditions some of the tribes have of passing down heritage and wisdom through storytelling. The book includes a recipe for Fry Bread for those who have never tried it before.
