Goat Yoga

My friend Jenna and I decided to attend a goat yoga session on Moffet Lawn. Although I had heard of goat yoga before, I had never actually participated in one of these unique classes. Initially, I was surprised at how tiny and adorable the goats were. There were only a handful of them, maybe five in total, and they would energetically run around the enclosed area, eagerly chasing after anyone who had food. The yoga itself was straightforward, largely because most participants were more captivated by the goats than the poses; their attention was fixated on the goats as they playfully jumped onto people's backs. In the end, I would recommend goat yoga. It significantly lifted my spirits and generated a lot of laughter among the group. As the activity unfolded, I noticed that everyone around me was smiling, and seemed to have enjoyed the experience just as much as I had.

Education Club

Education club meets every other week and is perfect for people with any type of education major. Each meeting covers a different topic and sometimes features a guest speaker. In my opinion, the most informative meeting was when we played a Kahoot game about the requirements for our major. We discussed the various steps needed to become a teacher, including the essential workshops and where to find support if we have questions. As a freshman, learning about these requirements early on has been incredibly helpful for planning when to complete these workshops. This club is not only informative but also fun and engaging. There are many activities that will be helpful for me to know in the future when I become a teacher. I can use some of the lessons the club provides in my future classroom as well. It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with others who share the same major and interests.

Dowd Art Gallery

In the beginning of September, my friend and I attended the Dowd Art Gallery opening. The exhibit showcased an incredible variety of art, including pieces by my Fibers professor. As I walked around the gallery there was pottery, paintings, embroidery and sculptures. There were a few artists who discussed their artwork, which gave me a deeper understanding of the meaning behind their creations. Each artwork had a description next to it, listing the artist's name, the materials used, and occasionally the inspiration or message behind the piece. My favorite piece is in the picture above, it is 3 shields made out of children's toys, it contrasted the simplicity and playfulness of childhood with the challenges of adulthood. After this event I was shocked by the amount of talent there is in Cortland surrounding art. I found the gallery opening to be a fun and unique experience, and I hope to attend this event every year.

Intramural Soccer

At the start of the fall semester, 10 of my friends and I formed an intramural soccer team called the Goal Diggers. I was chosen to be captain and lead my team to a rewarding and exciting season. This experience made me closer with my teammates and allowed us to bond over the shared interest of soccer. As team captain one of my responsibilities was creating the starting lineup. It was very challenging for me to balance a winning strategy and ensure that my teammates felt valued. Additionally, due to the league rules, at every point in the game two boys and two girls must be on the field. My team faced difficulty with this rule due to my team including only three girls, leaving two girls to play the entire match when one couldn't attend. I am hoping to play again in the spring with the same team and see if we can make it farther in the tournament.

CORTACA Pep Rally

The night before Cortaca there was a pep rally on Main Street. My friends and I decided to join and show our support for the football team. Once I arrived there was hot chocolate, coffee and cookies. There was a band performing and various students were showcasing their club. As the pep rally continued, the cheerleaders and a few dance teams performed and energized the crowd. I enjoyed all of the performances and the upbeat music. The street was filled with students, who were all wearing Cortland merch. I'm very happy that I get to experience the large amount of pride for Cortland, especially all the students coming together for the football game. The week before the game there are activities and events that students can go to, for example making Cortland merch. I had so much fun at the pep rally and the game was even better, I can't wait to be a part of this tradition for the next three years!

Studying Abroad in Spain

I am interested in the study abroad program. Specifically, Spain at the University of Salamanca. This past spring I went on a school trip to France and Spain, and I loved Spain so much that I didn't want to leave. While I was there, I met a lot of other kids my age and was able to talk to them in Spanish and English, because they start learning English at a very young age. I think this experience helped me better understand Spanish culture, and if I went to Spain again at a different time in the year, I could experience more cultural aspects. These experiences would allow me to add Spanish culture into my curriculum and teach my student about their peer's customs. It is important for students at a young age to learn about different people and experience diversity in the classroom. If I'm able to discuss, for example, Spanish tradition in Spain, it would also allow for my Hispanic students to feel more included. My target age for teaching is around 2^nd grade, so as I'm teaching my students about numbers and addition, I can also teach them the Spanish numbers and use some techniques I learn while studying abroad. Overall, I think that studying abroad in Spain would be very beneficial to my teaching abilities and allow me to diversify my classroom. Students will be able to connect with others easier and understand the differences between their culture and someone's from another country.
