Language acquisition device refers to those inborn structures in our brain that give us a natural capacity to organise the spoken language that we hear in various grammatical ways. Following this idea, language structure is hardwired with a kind of "Universal Grammar".

On the one hand, principles refers to the 'knowledge" with which we are born and which are universal, making what it is called as "Universal grammar" or "generative grammar". On the other hand, parameters refers to the rules specific to each language, which are not innate. As the child doesn't know any particular language at birth, the exposure to language in the immediate environment will lead to the baby soon begin to act as (s)he knew something about the grammar of the language.

Chomsky´s theory about innatism says that all children are born with the capacity to acquire as many languages as the child is exposed to. This conceives two connected claims on his part, the first one says that we have some knowledge from the very beginning, of the grammar of our language, and this is unconscious because we are not thinking about grammar. He uses the term "competence" to this knowledge that lies deep in us.
The second claim of Chomsky "generic grammar" says that there are some set of rules and structures that all languages share and this helps the child in the process of acquiring any language because we all learn in the same way and make the same mistakes.

Noam Chomsky published a groundbreaking book called "syntactic structures", his theory says that we are born with an innate understanding of language, because all the languages contain similar structures (universal grammar) and that is why children around the world acquire language the same way.
In order to understand Chomsky's ideas, in the present work we are going to explain his three main theories.
