4th floor of the library

Q1: The two surrounding bookshelves provides a intimate feeling which the user is able to feel 'trapped' within the isolated space of the area. The material, being books made out of paper is a comfortable feeling which relates to how students feel at times, to feel at home with the surrounding. The lighting emitting from the end of the path, symbolises the end journey which every student will experience when they have reach the end of their university life.

Q2: The lighting on the ceiling allows the user to experience a sort of 'minimal' feeling, as the light is shone at a moderate amount just enough for the books to be seen by any passers by. It contrast well with the natural lighting from the window, as it is the main source of light which sort of illuminate the place. The plain and boring yet seemingly effective materials, which from the bookshelves are derive from give emphasis on the books. It lets the reading becomes the primarily function of that space, rather than admiring the bookshelves. The carpet gives off a 'roomy' experience as it makes the user feel as in stepping into the pages of the books they read.

Sunlight also maintains the temperature inside the building. Plants are grown so that it has a relaxing feel in the space. Partial portion of green colour carpet is used to blend in with the plants.

- Question 2
The long building design allows lots of room to place windows. It is the most practical place since it's has a large area of space and it is not directly facing the Sun's direction. It's long building design allows the amount of light to be consistent around the space.

Assignment 2 Progress
Selected 2 buildings which are:
1. Kuala Lumpur Perfroming Arts Centre (KLPAC)

The impressive KLpac building has a long history. The railway warehouse was in Sentul Park, a piece of land which came under YTL ownership with the acquisition of another company. The remodel features glass windows along the front of the building, as well as a walkway leading up to the building.
In the 1800s, the building was a wood-crafting workshop and sawmill. In 1906, it became part of Sentul Works becoming the region’s most important railway depot & workshop. It then was bombed during tail end of WWII but was soon rebuilt. It was converted into a makeshift golf clubhouse in the late 1960s, but became abandoned in the early 1990s. In 1995, Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham created the first privately owned and operated theatre in Malaysia below Datarn Merdeka, called The Actor's Studio at PlazaPutra (now known as Dataran Underground). In 2003, flash floods in Kuala Lumpur destroyed the underground complex. In May 2004, Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia, YTL Corporation Berhad and The Actors Studio Malaysia created a new jointly-owned platform to develop the performing arts, which became the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac). KLPac opened its doors in May 2005.

The 4 main spaces in KLPAC:

Pentas 1 (a Proscenium Theater): 504 seats

Pentas 2 (a Black Box Theater): 192 seats depending on configuration

Indicine (A film screening room): 100 seats

Academy: 9 Studios for rehearsals and training

Supporting Facilities
-Holding Room, Resource Centre, Box Office, Pentas 1 Foyer Bar, Pentas 2 Foyer Art Gallery, Surau, Merchandise Counters, Workshop, Green Room for Artistes, Wardrobe & Laundry Room, Costume & Props Store, Technical, Training Studio, Security Office, Conference Room, Administration Office & Production Offices

2. Menara Mesiniaga, Subang Jaya
Architect: Ken Yeang (T.R. Hamzah and Yeang Sdn. Bhd.)

Mesiniaga Tower is the IBM headquarters in Subang Jaya. Architect Kenneth Yeang's ten-year research into bio-climatic principles for building design has created this office building. It is a high-tech, 15-storey which consists of a green base, 10 circular floors of office space with terraced garden balconies and external louvers for shade, and is crowned by a spectacular sun-roof, arching across the top-floor pool.

Yeang's ecologically and environmentally design strategies reduce long-term maintenance costs by lowering energy use. Importantly, designing with the climate in mind brings an aesthetic dimension to his work that is not to be found in typical glass-enclosed air-conditioned medium-to-high rise buildings. The tower has become a landmark, and increased the value of the land around it. The jury found it to be a successful and promising approach to the design of many-storied structures in a tropical climate.

We think that both the building has their own potential. Hope to get suggestion form Ms Norma.

Thank you.

Class Activity : Well Done! I think your group have captured both Q1 and Q2 very well and how you use the visual to support you explanation.

Congratulations!

For Project 2 - Progress

@KLPAC - Building is interesting just like the building materials, but its not easy for you to access this building and photography in the building can cost up to 5K. You might want to try @DPAC at Empire Damansara if you still want to go under this category. Or else i will suggest - RUANG by Thinkcity in KL or Balai Seni Lukis Negara.

@Mesiniaga is an old building for green technology or green building - I will suggest you to study the NEW PAM BUILDING at Jalan Tandok - next to APW Bangsar for a better access and information.

Good Luck !

Truly,
Ms.Normah
