2.  How does that evidence help establish that particular tone?
By saying that "no one was surprised" from Phil's death, the author creates a seemingly nonchalant tone that shows how everyone had expected this death.  But when the president is asking around, "'Who's been working the hardest,'" the tone reveals a hidden bitterness in the narrator by showing how the president was unaware of all of Phil's hard work that had killed him.
3.  How does that tone contribute to the main themes present in the story?
By using a nonchalant tone, the text suggests that that incidents like Phil's death were not uncommon during this time. The second passage is showing the parallel structure between the two and by them saying they "need" things, in reality that is just a message that they need a break and need to stop being overworked.

It accentuates the theme because it helps establish a tone and how these women are feeling.
