I taught in an extended resource room for 7 years. I had a variety of learners ranging from ASD, TBI, DD, OHI, and many others. For the past 3 years I have been the Principal at a local elementary school in Pocatello, Idaho. I have been a single parent for 14 years. With 3 young children at home and a very messy divorce I went to school to get my teaching certificate. I loved teaching and miss it terribly. However, within our Gen Ed classes we have students that are on the spectrum but are not as involved as the learners I taught. I am looking for practical applications to assist my Gen Ed teachers with their learners on the spectrum.

I graduated in 2002 at ASU-West. I graduated with a dual certificate of Elementary Education K-8 and Special Education K-12. I was 8 months pregnant with my first child when I walked at graduation for my Bachelor's. That was in December. I had my son in February when my world was turned upside down and inside out. I went through some serious postpartum issues. After having my son in Arizona, about a 1 1/2 later we moved home to Idaho where our family was and began our lives in Ashton. We live there still with two children. My son, now 15, was diagnosed last February 2017 as having "High-Functioning Autism" (aka-Asperger's Syndrome) and ADHD. This has been hard for him to accept as a teenager, but we are now receiving the help we need to be able to move forward with a little more understanding along the way. My daughter is 10 going on 16 and she is a little spitfire and has me pushing my boundaries in Girl Scouts and other adventures. My children are my world.
I also have some family members who are on the spectrum. One of them is my inspiration as to why I went into Special Education. He is a beautiful person!
I have not had my own classroom yet, however I have been a para-professional for a 1st grader who was on the spectrum for two consecutive years and I am a substitute in my school district. My children need me at home right now, but I have always stayed involved in our district somehow and kept my certification current. This is my last credit, as my certification is up for renewal this August.
I am very active in my community with the chamber of commerce, 4th of July chairman, GOP representative for my county at many different levels, and community fundraiser coordinator. Besides my community involvement, I am active in my church and help with my family's many businesses in our city. To say, I don't let myself get bored is an understatement. My doctor's tell me I am too busy, but it is my medicine to stay busy and serve my community and those around me.

This year I will be starting my 30th year as a Special Education teacher having worked all 30 in a middle school setting. For those who have taught and have had the privilege of having students on the spectrum know that no 2 students are alike. I am hoping to gain more practical knowledge and find more assistive technology that will help my students be more successful. I am married with two adult boys, a beautiful daughter-in-law and the most amazing 4 month old granddaughter. I am blessed with all the opportunities I have had in the 30 years of teaching.

I am getting ready to start my 12th year of teaching high school science: chemistry, physics, physical science, and integrated science (special ed science). I have two daughters (8 & 10 years old), my 10 year old daughter has autism. Since her diagnosis we have been involved in lots of therapies for her, education for my family, and it has slowly influenced my teaching. I have become more aware of students with special needs with all the work and education involving my daughter. I hoping this class will not only help me help my students more in class, but will give me more tools for helping my daughter.

I am getting ready to start my 8th year of teaching Science at Borah High School in Boise. Specifically I teach Biology for sophomores and Anatomy & Physiology for juniors and seniors. As a science teacher I have had fairly limited exposure to students on the Autism Spectrum. I have had a few in my early years of teaching but they were removed from my classes due to behavior and other issues. I am taking this class to be more informed about children with Autism because it is something that I am not very familiar with and it makes me nervous sometimes.

I am a secondary English teacher. I began in a traditional brick and mortar classroom but am now in my fourth year as a full time online instructor. I teach for ACVS. Each teacher spends one day a week in one of our three lab with students.
Also, although we are online communication by email, phone, and video chat occurs daily with students.
As some autistic students struggle with social situations and traditional classrooms we do have a large number of students on the autism spectrum.
I did take a PD course through my school regarding autism that was based on the book "Life Animated". I learned a lot and hope to continue learning so I can better understand and serve my students.

I enrolled in this course because I would like to learn more about ASD and how I can support these students. Prior to teaching special education, I was a bilingual Title One Tutor in the same school. We have a dual immersion program that teaches students both Spanish and English. I really enjoy working in Special Education.
