The construction of the church began in 1310 and 18 years later, in 1328, the entire monumental complex was completed except for the bell tower. The church was built by Gagliardo Primario who, in respect of the mystical climate in which Gothic art had developed in Europe, completed the work in the name of the pure simplicity of the Franciscan princes: a single nave 82 meters long, 13 meters wide and high 46 on which ten chapels open on each side.
