Relating the source to the SDG

The source chosen relates to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8, decent work and economic growth, through the conditions that the Chinese labourers are working in and how they are getting paid. SDG 8 is to promote good working conditions and receiving the right amount of money to compensate the work. Research shows that the labourers working in sweatshops and factories in China are working countless hours while receiving little to no pay in return. On the other hand, the removal of these facilities entirely would “threaten global supply chains” with extinction, because having labourers is important to make many of the goods that people receive in many other places. This is what is causing the crisis in these facilities. People that are currently looking for a job aren’t going to want to work at these places because they are going to be treated unfairly. SDG 8 plans doesn’t plan to eliminate these kinds of factories but transform them into a place where the employees are getting paid a fair amount based on the labour they do and also getting the right number of days off to take care of their mental health. This, in turn, will create a stable, flowing economy and possibly reduce the inflation of prices of certain goods that are created in the factories. This will all help make sure that global supply chains aren’t going to be affected by factories that people won’t want to work in.

How much does the modern world rely on cheap factory labour in places like China and what is its importance in global supply chains?

The modern world relies on cheap labour in areas like China a little too heavily, in my opinion. In every store, a random item could be chosen and it will most likely have been made in a country like China, India or Thailand. While this does have a good impact to global supply chains, being able to produce goods efficiently, it also will eventually fail because of the decreasing amount of people that will take the pay offered for the labour. This can be taken as either a bad thing or a good thing. The downside is that the places that these factories are in will suffer an economic failure, which could possibly spread globally. On the other hand, the upside is that this will call for many other countries to start producing these goods, giving more job opportunities in areas that can create the resources needed to make the goods. Eventually, a majority of factories like the ones in China will possibly scale down, reducing the amount of air pollution that happens.
