  • Think it: Before you talk, stop and think! This is actually the hardest step, so take your time. 
  • Turn on mic
  • Say it: Talk naturally and clearly. Try not to talk like...a...robot! 
  • Turn off mic
  • Check it: Use text-to-speech as a reading support. There will be no spelling mistakes so your ear or your eyes have to catch recognition errors. 
  • Fix it: Decide whether to fix a few words or re-dictate the whole sentence more clearly. Use an editing checklist and other AT tools as needed. 

    • Students with expressive language difficulties will need support and/or reminders to follow the steps for each sentence.

    Starting with speech to text with single words (such as filling in the blanks on a worksheet) may be more successful to start with. Also, using simple one syllable words and building on the success from that. Names can be tricky for speech recognition.
