The snow pack can be the cause of an avalanche because the first layer of snow could be stable snow and the second unstable which could cause the first layer slide on the second layer making an avalanche.

The terrain is a big part in an avalanche because if the terrain is too shallow the snow won't slide and if it's too steep it will fall straight away. For an avalanche to appear the terrain has to 30°-60°.
