Rooster bowls were known for their above-average quality back in those days. They are an affordable alternative for those who could not afford the bowls of the upper class. The reason for a rooster design is probably because ‘rooster’ sounds like ‘family’ or ‘home’ in Hokkien, one of the Chinese dialects. As such, many felt that when they ate from a rooster bowl, they are wishing for prosperity in their household. Additionally, the peonies painted on the bowl represent a common Chinese saying – “花开富贵” which literally means the flowers blossom with richness or prosperity.

source: https://www.nyonyacooking.com/magazine/what-makes-the-rooster-design-on-a-bowl-so-special~ZPIzWs2j4

This is the prison tag of a prisoner of war, a member of one of Singapore’s intelligence forces. This is an artefact that represents our collective Singaporean culture, reflecting the struggles and hardships our ancestors endured to give us a better future. Even though Newsom was not born in Singapore, nor was he a Singaporean, he gave everything he could for our nation. We think this artefact emphasises racial harmony, which is integral to our cultures and beliefs in respect and harmony.

Red packets, or hóngbāo, are a key symbol of Chinese culture, representing good luck, prosperity, and blessings. Traditionally given during Chinese New Year, weddings, and special occasions, they express love, respect, and strengthen family bonds. The red color wards off evil and brings happiness, while the money inside symbolizes the sharing of fortune. The practice highlights values like generosity, respect for elders, and belief in auspicious numbers. Even the amount given often reflects cultural superstitions, such as avoiding the number 4 and favoring lucky numbers like 8. Overall, red packets embody tradition, unity, and cultural pride across generations.
