Character: Katherine/Kat

In my interpretation of Taming of the Shrew there were many differences and some similarities. The main difference in this version than the others was the fact the Katherine choose to leave Petrucio for good. In other versions Katherine stays loyal the entire time, but she realizes in Taming of the Shrew that he is no good for her. There is alot some similarities in Katherine in “Taming of the Shrew”, “10Things I Hate About You”, and “Moonlighting”. One similarity is Katherine realizes she is the problem and ultimately she is the one that needs to change in all three versions. We see this take place when she ends up going out with patrick to the prom in “10 Things I Hate About You”.

Character: Petruccio/Patrick

My interpretation of Petruccio/Patrick/David in “Taming of The Shrew”, “10 Things I Hate About You”, and “Moonlighting” is very similar and the character is portrayed the same thought each film. Petruccio to me is intereprated as mean and rude because he is only in it for the money part of it. For example, In “Taming of The Shrew”, and “Moonlighting” because Petruccio/ David called out for Katerine in order to make a simple bet of money. My Petrucio portrayed as Patrick in ‘10 Things I hate about you” is very similar because originally he was only with Katherine for the money, but he changed as the film went on and ended up being a good guy and ended up crushing on her. Overall Petruccio/Patrick/David is very similar in all three films, but there is defiantly a few differences.

Overall Theme

Throughout each verison we watched, I believe the main theme is gender expectations. In my interpreation Katherine puts a foot down and does not come back to Petruccio. This shows that women can stand up for what they believe and she showed all the wife’s that they are all capable of doing the same if they so do desire. Katerine disregarded all the money Petruccio would have won on the bet and did not return. She proved that she could fend for herself and that women are perfectly capable of being strong and independent. Overall this scene is different from all three versions. “Taming of the Shrew”. “10 Things I Hate About You”, and “Moonlighting” because in all three of these versions Katerine would always come back to Petruccio showing that men are more dominant and that women most obey and listen to them. She would listen and follow him even when he was super rude and aggressive. Katherine was always set on being loyal to him in all three versions no matter the circumstances. When Katherine goes back into the dinner room to see which wife’s came back, Petruccio imediatly yelled at her because he lost a bet and then went on to call her ugly and Katherine ended up questioning whether or not she did in fact like him or not. Overall all three versions portrayed the men as the dominant figure in the relationship which is what society tries to show. I believe that both genders should viewed qually and there should be no “gender expextations” rather just a equal feeling for both sides.

Scene Choice

The End of Taming of the Shrew Scene

In my interpretation of the end of “The Taming of the Shrew”, all the wife’s leave the dinner table and the men all make bet’s as to which wife will come back. When all the wife’s left the men requested each of them to return and among all of them Katherine does not return to Petruccio, which means he loses the bet. This action shows that he will not return to Petruccio and does not love him anymore. In other versions and throughout this version Katherine was very submissive towards Petruccio and showed him that he had the power. By showing this scene, I wanted to show that Katherine had power and wanted to show that women can and deserve the same amount of power as men in a relationship. Today’s society only shows the dominance of men and I think it is very important to recognize equal representation and power of both genders.
