When I was a little kid, I love going to the beach, playing with the water, building sand castles, etc,... But there is one particular event that had made me not so fond of the water anymore. Back in Vietnam, when i was still in 7th grade, my cousins come to visit me from the US, we went to Nha Trang, which was famous for it's beautiful beach.
I was so excited to go to the beach but then as soon as i went in, a jellyfish stung me in the palm of my hand. At first, it was very itchy and I felt a small sting. Then it escalate very fast and my palm become red and I started crying since it hurts so bad. I came up to the shore and cried for a solid amount of time. Then i came back to the water because I still want to enjoy that trip with my cousin. But then my hand just reacts when it touches the salty sea water and i couldn't play with my cousin at all.
I was very sad, until today every time me and my cousin have the chance to gather, we would talk about this and laugh. Even though it was very fun to talk about, I am still not very fond of the beach and doesn't enjoy going into the water as how I used to anymore.

Summary: The book " Into The Wild" written by tell a story about a guy named going on an adventure (p.3) into the wild with the intensions to free himself. In the first chapter, we were told about the begining of his journey. After he left his hometown, he hitchhiked to Alaska, due to the cold weather, it was hard to survive out in the nature so he went into the big road, raising his thumb up looking for a ride (p.4). That's when he met Jim Gallien, Jim offered him a ride and asked about Christ's information but Christ chose to hide his actual identity and told Jim that his name was Alex. After a two hour drive to the edge of Denali Park, Jim acknowledge Christ's plan to travel into the trackless wilderness (p.5) and showed his concern about Christ's minimal (p.5) amount of supplies that he is bringing. Gallien ended up dropping Christ off, he insisted Alex to have his lunch that his wife packed for him and a pair of shoes. After that, Gallien is still worried about him, he were about to inform the Alaska State Troopers about Christ, but he ended up not doing it, because he thinks that when he's hungry, he would just go back to the main road because that is something any normal (p.7) person would do.

Analysis: I feel like Christ had left everything behind, his parents, his money, his future, just to go to an adventure with no preparations. It is good to have ambitions but I think that since he grew up in a wealthy family he is familiar with everything taken care of for him which explained his actions of coming unprepared and it led to an unfortunate event.
#alwaysbeprepared #wildin #onthemove

Summary: Beginning of this chapter, we get to know more about the background of the bus that McCandless was staying at for four months during his adventure in the wild, the bus was originally bought and used by the construction workers (p.10) to stay in, then ended up being left there for hunters and trappers. On September 9, a group of 6 Alaskan including Ken, an owner of a auto-body workshop, his employees, and their friends went on the Stampede Trail, then ended up stopping by the bus (p.10) that McCandless was staying in. They arrived at the bus by noon, when they went there, they heard people saying that there was a bad smell (p.12) coming from within the bus. One of the guys from the group went up to see what's creating the bad smell and found a decaying body (p.13) in a sleeping bag within the bus and decided that the body should be evacuated immediately. After the body was taken into autopsy, they figured out the cause of death was due to starvation, and they also found a piece of S.O.S note knotted on a tree near the vehicle, and under it was Christ McCandless autograph.

Analysis: I feel very bad for McCandless but also couldn't understand why did he choose to end up like this, he had a family, money, knowledge, but he choose to die in the middle of nowhere, cold and alone. However, I couldn't imagine what it would be like living in desperation hoping someone would come and help, but no one showed up.
#Intotheunknown #sad

Summary: In this chapter, we were taken back to Christ's first few steps into his journey. We were taken to South Dakota, where Jon Krakauer was asking Wayne Westerberg about McCandless, Wayne told him the story about a hitchhiker (p.16) that he picked up in 1990. Wayne talks about Christ as there is something arresting (p.16) about his eyes that made Wayne wants to " take the kid under his wings". With that being said, Wayne offered Christ a ride and even dinner, Christ told Wayne that his destination (p.17) was at Saco Hot Springs, Wayne said that he could only drive Christ 10 miles and then he would head north. But when Wayne have to drop McCandless off, it was late at night and raining (p.17) heavily, so he couldn't let Christ go, he then offered to take Christ to Sunburst, he stayed with Wayne for 3 days and they went separate ways. When they parted, Wayne told Christ that if he ever need a job (p.17) he could come to Carthage to look for him.

Analysis: You wouldn't meet a lot of people like Wayne in today's society, Christ was so lucky to meet him during his wanderings days. Wayne didn't care who Christ was, he just saw a person in need of help then he helped him.
#familylove #ahelpinghand

Summary: In October 1990, after three months after Christ had left Atlanta, a National Park Service ranger named Bud Walsh and his team found an old yellow Datsun with a note (p.26) on it. The note said that this car had been abandoned (p.26) and that whoever could get the car out of the mud could have it. They then look for suspicious things around the area, then 5 days later, a ranger came back and drove the Datsun to the National Park Service, they ended up not finding the actual owner of the car, and over the next three years, they used it as an undercover vehicle for drug interdiction (p.27). McCandless arrived in Lake Mead National Recreation Area on July 6, which he then met a flash flood (p.28) not long after he set up his tent, he manage to gather his tent and belongings but not the car, the flood was not strong enough to move the car but it had caused damage to the engine. After he left the Datsun, McCandless went to California and bought a second hand canoe (p.32) and decided to buy it, then lives off only eating the rice that be brought with him and fishes that he caught with the canoe. On December 14, tired of paddling, he left the canoe and got caught by the immigration polices, he then got release on the US, Mexico border and went back to Detrital Wash to dig up the possessions that he left there, then with that, he continues to live on the road in Los Angeles.

Analysis : Through this chapter, from his actions of leaving behind the canoe and his "beloved" Datsun, I could see that McCandless is a free soul and is willing to leave anything that would hold him back on his adventure. Also from this chapter, I could see that McCandless parent was looking for him, yet he tend to run away and wants to cut all ties with them, but he still kept in touch with Wayne, a stranger that doesn't have any blood relation with him.
#theonethatgotaway #freesoul

Summary: From a letter that Jan Burres received from Mccandless, McCandless reveals that he spent July and August on the Oregon Coast, in September, he hitched (p.39) down the US Highway into California, and by October, he landed in Bullhead City, Arizona. When McCandless got to Bullhead City, he stopped there for more than two months, on the card he sent to Westerberg, he said that he might settle down and abandon (p.39) his tramping life. He then got a job at McDonalds, he even open his own savings (p.39) account at a local bank. After two years of him working in McDonalds, his colleagues only expression of him was that he had a thing about not wearing socks (p.40) but his work place requires to wear them so he have to wear them during work, but the minute he got out, he would get rid of them first thing, they also said that he got a unpleasant smell, and for this reason he would have unpleasant time with his coworker, which led him to quit. In December 1991, Christ started living with Jan and Bob at Niland Slabs, a huge flea market (p.43) , he met this girl name Tracy, Tracy developed a crush on him, but she was too young for him, so he didn't take her very seriously, because of this, he felt like he's getting attach to the place, so he decided that he will be moving on

Analysis: I feel like in this chapter, Christ starts to give up on being a drifter and somewhere in him wants to settle down. But in the end, he couldn't do it because it is not who he is.
#poor Tracy #McCandless

Summary: This chapter told a story about a guy named Everett Ruess, a guy that doesn't have any connection to Christ McCandless but are oddly similar to him, both came from upper-middle-class families, are well educated, and are wanderers (p.90). Just like Christ, Ruess craves for connections (p.91) with the natural world, they both want to create a new identity for themselves after setting foot into the wild, as a way to detach themselves from their previous life and feel fully connected to the wilderness (p.91). In March 1931, he sent a letter to his family, identifying himself as Lan Rameau and requesting that his parent should respect his brush name, his parent receive a letter again two months later from Ruess, but now, he had changed his name to Evert Rulan, and then in August 1931, he goes back to Everett Ruess, until he wanders into Davis Gulch, he switched into calling himself "Nemo", which translate into nobody (p.93) in Latin and then he vanished. His parents organized a search party to go looking for him, then they came across a " NEMO 1934 " carved on a stone, but besides that, none of Ruess's possessions were ever found. It is believed that Ruess fell (p.94) to his death while trying to go from one to another canyon wall, and just like Christ McCandless, he died because of his curiosity for nature.

Analysis: I think this chapter was written because Jon Krakauer wants to give us more examples of other people who are just like Christ McCandless. But unfortunately, not only Ruess was younger than Christ, but his body was never found.
#sad #hitchhiking #NEMO

Summary : After the body was found, the Alaska State Troupers couldn't identify it, so they asked the Anchorage Daily News to publish (p.99) an article describing Christ to see if someone would recognize him. On December 10, Jim Gallien saw the news and thought that it might be Alex so he called (p.99) state troopers to let them know about the boy that he gave a ride to a few months ago. Jim repeated Alex's lie by telling the police that Alex was from South Dakota, the investigation moved to South Dakota and they found a missing person from South Dakota named McCandless and the troopers thought that they have found their man but it turn out to be a false lead (p.100). On September 13, Wayne was outside of Jamestown in North Dakota, when one of his friend named Bob called and asked him to turn the radio (p.100) on because he heard about someone that starved to death in Alaska and realize it might have been Alex. Wayne called and provide Alex's real name and social security number which made the investigation goes the right way and it turns to Annandale, Virginia where Sam, Chirst's step brother were and fax over a photograph (p.101) of the dead hitchhiker, even though Christ had grew a beard and his hair was longer, Sam recognize him immidietly. After that, he went home and picked up his wife to drive to Maryland to inform their parents that Christ is dead.
Analysis : I can't even imagine how hard it is for Christ parents, their son left trying to cut all ties with them and they never heard from him ever since, and for the first news in months that they receive about their son is that he is dead.
#autopsy #weshouldlistentotheradiomore #caremoreaboutyourparents

Summary : This chapter begins by telling is about Christ's high school graduation and his plan to go on a trip, his parents didn't prevent him to leave and even offer Christ to take their credit card with him and an agreement to call (p.118) home every three day. As the summer goes by, the calls become less and less frequent, and then he came back just 2 days before his school term start with long tangled hair and he had shed (p.118) thirty pounds. Christ's parent dropped him off at college and his roommate was a preppy kid while Christ was the total opposite, but after ninety days, the roommate had dropped out and Christ had made it to the dean's list (p.119) . Christ relationship with his parents were unusually good after his graduation, but it had changed that summer, they didn't know why, but it turns out his anger was because of a discovery (p.121) he made two years ago. Walt has been with Marcia, his first wife, long after Billie even gave birth to Christ and he had divided (p.121) his time between two places, and two years after Christ was born, Walt have another son with his first wife. In the spring of 1990 was Chris graduation and they thought he seemed happy, he told them he was planning for another trip and then he donated all his money to OXFAM, loaded the yellow Datsun and vanished again. In July 1992, two years after Christ had left Atlanta, Billie was asleep when she woke up her husband, Walt, to tell him that she heard Chris called for help but she couldn't do anything about it because she didn't know where he was.

Analysis : It is quite shocking in this chapter to learn that Chris's dad have two families and none of them knew anything about it besides Chris. And instead of confronting his dad, he was keeping silent about it and plan to leave his household as soon as possible after he left college. It is also so heart breaking to me that Billie had a gut feeling about something wrong is happening to her son but she couldn't do anything about it because they haven't talk for so long and she had no clue where he was.
#twofamilies #twofaced #motherknowsbest

Summary : This chapter talks about Carine McCandless, Chris's younger sister, as the previous chapter mentioned, she is very close with Chris and in this chapter, the author talks about how Carine feel after Chris left and when she heard about his death. The narrator come to visit Carrine at her home in Virginia Beach and saw two of Chris's photo, she said that those pictures were taken 10 years apart, but his expression (p.128) remain the same, he always had an annoyed expression as if he doesn't want to be there. Carine shared that the summer that Chris disappear, he wanted to take Buck, their family dog, with him, but Buck had just got into a car accident so their parent refuse to let Buck go with Chris, and she said now that they look back at it, they wonder if Chris would taken the same chances (p.128) if Buck was with him. The next day, Carine and Sam flew to Fairbanks to bring home Chris's remains (p.131) and they visited Anchorage, where Chris was cremated, the mortuary delivers Chris's ashes in a box but his middle name was printed wrong, Carine was mad but then she thought Chris would think that it's funny. During the flight home, Carine ate every piece of food that was serve to her on the plain because she couldn't leave the food knowing that her brother starve (p.131) to death, a week later Carine appetite was lost and she also lost ten pounds. A month later, Billie would force herself to look at Chris's records of his final days and cry, and she would break down (p.132) from time to time .

Analysis : I can't imagine the pain that Billie have to go to, because as I said in the previous chapter analysis, Billie was having nightmare in the middle of the night and was looking for her son desperately. In this chapter, after Billie heard about her son's death, she lost 8 pounds before she could eat again, and after that, the only thing she could do is keep looking at her son pictures and cry.
#siblings #doge #poorBillie

Summary : In this chapter, Jon Krakauer told us about Chris's postcard that was sent to Wayne, the postcard said that if the adventure does goes fatal and if anything did happen to Chris, he wants Wayne to know that he is a great man, this make Jon think that Chris planning to commit suicide (p.134) when he walked into the wild, he never have any plan to walk back out again. Jon continues this chapter by telling us a story about his own past, in 1977, while he was in a bar in Colorado, he just decided to climb a mountain called the Devil's Thumb and he is going to do it alone (p.135) . Just like Chris, Jon loves the wilderness, but while Chris likes to go into the bush, traveling from place to place, Jon loves climbing (p.135) , Jon said that he loves climbing but he didn't think of it as a sport but climbing to Jon is like an escape from the inner torment (p.135) that frame his existence. Jon spend the night in Petersburg, Alaska on the floor in a lady's house that he met in the library and then he got drove to the Stikine Ice Pack by strangers and he began his climb there. As he begins to climb, a snowstorm (p.140) started so he had to set up a camp, Jon said that he was very anxious because he had no radio and his supplies were about to run out, so his only option was to go down.

Analysis : It is quite surprising to me that the author also relates to Chris by this way. This really proves to me that Chris wasn't crazy in a way because besides his story, the author includes so many other examples of people like Chris, including him. But Krakauer were still alive to tell us this amazing story of Chris and also himself.
#imjustlikeyou #yourjustlikeme #notverymuchtho

Summary : Krakauer remain in his tent and couldn't do anything due to how the weather is, and he continues to wait for the next three days, he said the hours are going by slowly, so he decided to smoke a marijuana stick that he had with him in an attempt to hurry (p.146) the time along. The marijuana made the tent more stuff and cramp because of all the smoke, and it also made Jon very hungry, he decide to make some oatmeal and he smelled something burning (p.146), he turned around to see the trash bag caught on fire and it burn the inner wall of the tent. The tent was borrowed (p.147) from his father, and he starts to remember the memories that he had with his father and how he taught him how to climb, they were just like Chris because his father and him doesn't get along very well either. He told us about his father suicide (p.149) attempt where he was there, his father was placed in a psychiatric hospital near Portland, and he also shared that he resembles his dad a lot, he is also couldn't amitt to his defeat, and on the afternoon of May 15, Krakauer had made it to the top of the Devil's Thumb. After that, Krakauer takes a few photos and started to go down again, after returning home, he realize that nothing have changed, and this make Jon realize that Chris may not have a death wish (p.155).

Analysis : This chapter tells us more about the author and his similarities with Chris McCandless, his relationship with his dad were similar, too. I think because of how similar they were, Krakauer could relates more to Chris, it's like he knows what Chris thinks and then he came to a solution that Chris didn't have a death wish at all. He wanted to go home to his family too but he was just wasn't as lucky as Jon.
#climbing #daddyissues #Devil'sThumb

Summary : In mid April 1992, on his trip to Denali Park, he asked a guy named Gaylord Stuckey for a ride, but Stuckey said that picking up hitchhikers it's against his company policy so he would only drive McCandless as far as Whitehorse, but when they got there, he changed his mind and he agree to drive Chris the entire distance (p.159) because he enjoy Chris's company so much. He recalls that Chris talked a lot about his family, his issues with his dad and his sister, Stuckey also said that Chris obsession about living alone (p.159) in the wild is something that he had been having since he was little. The noon of April 25, they arrived in Fairbanks and he took Chris to a grocery store (p.159) to buy some rice, Chris also bought a book about plants that he could eat, Stuckey told him that it's still early and there wouldn't be anything growing but he didn't care. After he left, Stuckey went back in hope to ask for Chris's parents numbers to call them himself but Chris was already gone. On April 1992, Chris was picked up by another man, named Jim Gallien and was drop off at Denali National Park, McCandless then follows a snow trail to get into the park. On May 1, McCandless found the bus (p.163) and it was left with some essentials from the previous visitors, Chris then wrote this in his journal as the "Magic Bus Day". As the days goes by, he hunts small animals and even a moose to supply for himself, but then he read Thoreau's Walden and learn that hunting and eating animals wasn't pure so he stopped. In 1992, Chris wanted to leave the bus and return to civilization (p.165) but he couldn't cross the Sushana River since the water level is very high and it could cost him his life, so he returned to the bus.

Analysis : It is so sad in this chapter about what happened between Stuckey and Chris, they have such a strong bond. For example, Chris told Stuckey about his family and his problems even though they just met, and it is even sadder that Stuckey tried to come back to look for Chris, hoping to spend more time with him but Chris was no where to be found.
#4lifers #strongbond #fatherfigure

Summary : A year and a week after Chris decided not to cross that river, our author stands from the other river bank and said to himself that he wants to cross that river (p.173), he wants to visit that bus and and he wants to see where Chris died to understand him better. But unlike McCandless, he have a map with him and also with his three companions. Krakauer mentions that maybe because Chris didn't have any map, so he have no clue that he could just reach the other side of the river with a aluminum basket (p.173) that was left on his side of the river to prevent trespassers. Krakauer and his friend then cross the river using that basket, as he progress, Krakauer said that along his many years of climbing mountain in Alaska, and he had intended to go on this trip alone, and when the other three tag along, at first, he felt annoyed, but now, he said he is grateful (p.176) for their company. When they arrived at the bus, they have found many of Chris's possessions that he left there, one of them is the boots with the name Gallien written across the cuff. As he sat down on a steel across the stove, he see more of Chris's belongings and it felt like he would be returning (p.179) soon, and it made him uncomfortable as if he is intruding. An hour later, they set up a fire outside and they cooked up some steak that Roman's got from shooting a moose last September, using the same grill (p.180) that McCandless used. Then they stayed up late, talking about Chris McCandless's death and wonder what kind of person that he is, then they all fell asleep.

Analysis : In this chapter, our author goes to Alaska to find the Magic Bus, Chris's resting place in hope to experience the same thing that Chris did in the past. When they got there, through the words of Krakauer, I felt somewhat kind of sad because it's like his friend is still with him but what remains of Chris to Krakauer is only memories now because Chris had been long gone.
#experiences #TheMagicBus #atriptoalaska
