Montesquieu disliked the french governments. He demonstrated this by writing a book titles "Persian Letters" which ridiculed the french governments and social classes. In his work the spirit of the laws he advanced the idea of separation of powers which provided to be a foundation for modern democracy. He felt that the best way to protect liberty was to divide the various functions and the powers of government among the legislative, executive and judicial branch. He also felt that each branch should be able to serve as a check on the other two an idea we call checks and balances.

"There is no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice." This quote means that there is nothing worse than if someone who has power does bad things in private.

"Success in the majority of circumstances depends on knowing how long it takes to succeed." Success really depends on patience and persistence.

Montesquieu provided the foundation of modern democracy. He also affected the framers of the united states constitution. Also influenced how the different branches serve as a check on each other which is what we now call checks and balances which is counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups.
