Section/Pages: “Gotama”
Members Present: Driscoll and DiMaggio

Discussion Highlights:
- we throughly discussed the chapters we read these last few weeks
-we talked about the recurring themes of the book
-we also discussed the development of the plot
-character development shows to be very evident as we read further into this book

“Gotama”

Siddhartha comesacross a group of Buddhist monks and becomes fascinated withtheir teachings. He learns that their leader is a man named Gotama, who is known as the Buddha, or "the enlightened one." Siddhartha isdrawn to Gotama's teachings and decides to seek him out. Hetravels to a nearby town where Gotama is staying and listens to histeachings. While Siddhartha admires Gotama and his teachings, hefeels that he cannot follow them completely. He believes thatenlightenment cannot be taught but must be experienced throughpersonal realization. He also realizes that he must find his own pathto enlightenment. The chapter teaches us about the differencebetween seeking spiritual enlightenment through following a teacheror seeking it through personal experience. It also touches upon theidea of individualism and finding one's own path in life.

Hemeets a beautiful courtesan named Kamala, who becomes his loverand teaches him about the ways of the world. Kamala introducesSiddhartha to the pleasures of physical love, as well as the finerthings in life, such as fine clothing, jewelry, and luxurioussurroundings. While Siddhartha enjoys his time with Kamala andbecomes wealthy and successful, he realizes that these pleasurescannot truly bring him happiness or inner peace. He becomesdisillusioned with his life and decides to leave Kamala and return tohis spiritual journey. The chapter teaches us about the fleetingnature of physical pleasures and the limits of material wealth. It alsotouches upon the importance of finding balance in life and the needto find one's own path in the pursuit of happiness and fulfillment.
