They are commonly used for decoration or to help get better sleep as many American indigenous tribes believe them to capture nightmares before they can enter the body as it sleeps. However, this piece of indigenous artwork is commodified and mass-produced by nonindigenous people for nonindigenous people who either aren't aware or aren't interested in its original purpose as a way to protect from bad dreams. They are instead used as a simple trendy accessory or a typical decoration on people's walls. This is a commonly seen example of modern-day cultural appropriation which can be dangerous if left unchecked. A lack of respect for indigenous culture can take away pieces of that culture over time as it can strip away context making something like a dreamcatcher utterly devoid of its original meaning and purpose and nothing more than a popular wall decoration. There are four ways to categorize cultural appropriation 

• Exchange: This form is defined as a reciprocal exchange between two cultures that are approximately equal in terms of power and dominance.
• Dominance: This type involves a dominant culture taking elements of a subordinate culture that has had a dominant culture forced upon it.
• Exploitation: This type is defined as taking cultural elements of a subordinate culture without compensation, permission, or reciprocity.
• Transculturation: This form involves taking and combining elements of multiple cultures, making it difficult to identify and credit the original source.
