The Invention of the Steam Engine

An invention that revolutionized everything when it was created. It allowed people to travel long distances in short amounts of time. However, the big effect was how it increased the transfer of goods. Items such as cloth and materials could not be traded very far from the location of origin without taking a long time. The steam engine changed that, making it so these goods could go all sorts of places in a short amount of time.

Due to the steam engine allowing for more places to sell stuff, companies needed more things to sell, and fast. Factories of all sorts began popping up in the 1820's, opening up jobs and allowing for technological advancements in goods production (machine powered instead of man powered)

So, at this point in time, we have the ability to go to all sorts of places and make all sorts of things. That's pretty neat. But what happens when the raw materials run short? Factories can't make stuff anymore, so they don't make money, so they can't pay their workers, and it all snowballs into the shutdown of a factory. The answer to this problem lay in other places- by seizing control of areas that have plenty of valuable, raw goods, they could continue to make stuff, as well as start making new things. (for example, spices)

Queen Victoria was crowed queen of England within this year, and with her new power, a ton of stuff happened. Under her rule, the phrase "The sun never sets on the British Empire" was coined, due to the fact that as queen, she had substantially expanded the rule of the British Empire so much and so far that the sun was always shining on a part of the empire. Other European countries saw how much money the British were making from this, and decided to hop in the train of imperialism.

This is when Africa was found to be an amazing producer of money, due to the fact that extremely valuable resources were found (gold and diamonds). And thus, the scramble for Africa began. Dozens of European countries rushed to Africa and eagerly began colonizing it. Around this time, England had also established rule in India, which was another extreme powerhouse for making that sweet sweet cash.

After a pretty long time of being under European rule, natives of Africa and India were fed up. So, as anyone does, they began revolutionizing. Most notably, a man named Mahatma Gandhi rose up, encouraging his fellow Indians to fight up against oppressive rule. In the end, the European countries backed off, and the former colonies were free to build civilization how they wanted. Imperialism sort of died down around this time, due to the fact that places to conquer had run out.
