The first cosmonaut of the history of space exploration was Yuri Gagarin who in April 1961 had an orbital flight aboard the ship Soviet Vostok. Flight which caused a reaction from the United States, the space race and the arrival of man on the moon. Today, the number of people who had the privilege to go to space amounts to a little over 400. The advancement of space tourism, however, has opened new horizons for access to the cosmos. The first Brazilian astronaut went into space in 2006 through the "Centenary Mission". Lt. Col. Marcos Pontes, 43, departed the ISS (short for International Space Station) to board the Russian spacecraft Soyuz TMA-8, which took off from the Baikonur launch pad in Kazakhstan. The participation of Brazil in the flight originated when Brazil joined the fifteen nations group involved in the International Space Station project. This happened in 1997 and the following year, Bridges was selected by AEB (Brazilian Space Agency) and NASA (North American Space Agency) to represent his country in space.
