The building, which houses until today, the 3rd Senior High School of Rethymnon was built with the funding of the Cristian Church in 1926. It opened in 1927 and worked as a 6-grade Senior High School for females only. In 1979-80 it became a mixed school and it was renamed into 3rd Senior High School. There are totally three grades. This year every grade has four classes with 300 students totally. In the Second grade students must choose between theoretical lessons (ancient Greek and rhetoric, sociology) and, as we call them, positive lessons (maths, physics). In the end of each year students have final exams, on the end of the third grade, students, depending on their results, can choose the university and the expertise, that they want to study.
The building has two floors the symmetry of the building can be observed and from the inside and from the outside, for example the floors are tiles which compose symmetrical patterns, which are placed here since 1926, when the school was built (you can see that in the photos). As we can see in the picture there are many axes of symmetry, for example the red lines of the picture. Except the axes of symmetry there are also points of reflection (for example point A, point B). The tiles which form squares and circles have been rotated 180o around the point A, point B.

Rafail G.

Four fluted Corinthian columns with acanthus –leaf capitals support an architrave on with the words LIBERALITATIS and FONTES can still be read, with the Rimondi coat or arms above the central basin.

In symmetry:

We observe that this fountain haw a unique balance.

In the Cycladic islands, traces of a particular culture called Cycladic civilization have been found. The Cycladic peoples, sailors, developed not only commerce but also the arts. Most figurines were found in graves and some in houses, sanctuaries and settlements. They represent naked women with arms folded to the chest. In the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. but male figurines are also made. Male figures are depicted in specific activities such as as musicians or hunters or warriors. Violet figurines were found, with a body more reminiscent of a violin
Symmetry:

We observe that if we draw the symmetry axis on the Cycladic figurines there is a perfect symmetry as we see in the three figures.
Elia Sfak.

Parthenon is a temple built in honor of the goddess Athena. It is the most magnificent monument of Athens. The architects who worked for this were Ιctinos, Kallikratis and probably Fidias. Τhe Parthenon has symmetry in the smallest detail.

The front of the Parthenon has a symmetrical axis. It has a two-sided triangle with a symmetrical axis where it's depicted Panathinaia, the biggest religious celebration of the Athens.

The top view of the Parthenon has symmetrical axis as well. All around the temple there were 8 columns in width and 17 in length. On the narrow sides there was a second row of 6 columns and its roof was supported by 4 columns.

Maria Ktist.

Fortezza is the castle of Rethymno in Crete, Greece. It was built by the Venetians in the 16th century but it was captured by the Ottomans in 1646.

The central gate is to the east of the fortress between the bastions of St. Paul and St. Nicholas. It consists of a large arcade of 27 meters long and 3.8 meters wide, while on the north side of the arcade there are three guards. Above the key of the bow is a recess, in which there was the lion of St. Mark, the emblem of Venice.

Furthermore, it is clear than we can discern that the gate has a distinct symmetry. According to the definition of symmetry, the gate can be divided into two identical pieces that are arranged in an organized fashion.

Katerina Ts
