For me, the most critical aspect of nursing is providing culturally sensitive individualized care. I have developed my understanding of Australians' cultural and linguistic diversity, underscoring the need to respect these differences. Having studied cultural/social considerations in (Migrant & Refugee Women's Health Partnership, 2019, p.12), Domain 1.1, I feel better equipped to care for refugees/immigrants. This skill is essential in my workplace because, as a student nurse, I will be caring for/working with people from diverse countries, and this skill will enhance patient outcomes/ensuring that all care is respectful and inclusive. I will integrate these practices into my work to deliver effective and compassionate care to a diverse population.

Reference:

Gagliardi, A. R., Armstrong, M.

Sudanese refugees face health issues due to their challenging experiences before and during migration, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety, malnutrition, skin conditions, malaria, etc. According to the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide» Australian Refugee Health (2012), malaria is endemic in many Sudanese refugee countries.

The issue of malaria among Sudanese refugees requires urgent and specialized treatment. The World Health Organization (2023) states that one effective treatment option is to refer all patients to a physician with experience in malaria management. Patients with uncomplicated malaria who tolerate oral medication should be treated with oral artemisinin-based combination therapy (Phillips & Francis, 2015).

References:

1. About the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide» Australian Refugee Health.

Non-discrimination and social inclusion are critical social determinants of health (World Health Organization, 2024), especially for Sudanese arriving from war zones to Australia. According to Abur and Mphande (2019), social isolation is one of the hardest in settlement for people with other support. According to (Reinforcing Racism, 2019), since their significant arrival in 2004 and 2005, Sudanese have faced challenges, including racial discrimination, tribe, nationality, etc. Social inclusion efforts, such as community support programs and access to language/education, have helped reduce these challenges by fostering a supportive environment, and these efforts are essential for reducing the stress and isolation often experienced by refugees, which helps promote better mental health outcomes.

References:

1. Abur, W., & Mphande, C.
