I agree with this with all my heart. I think the main point is we all should accept that refugees are human like us and they have desires, dreams, targets, needs etc. When we approach them this the only thing that we should consider. Otherwise we ll not have empathy about their problems. It is terrfic that he spent 1.5 year on the boat to come and find a secure place for himself and to survive. That is the reason they should have all kinds of opportunities to integrate in their new culture and country.

When I worked in America in a refugee school, I realized that they have basic needs beyond reading and writing. They do not know how to get hospital or how to communicate with embassy for paper issues, how to use closets, how to use money and how to get exchange etc. I think before schooling we as teachers should support and help about their daily life needs. The one of the main problem is communication. Most of the parents cannot communicate well like their children and they use their kids as translator. One of my students took his mom to doctor and he told about his moms' pain and problems to doctor. Then he translated to his mom. By the way, he was only 7. When doctor got the results and told him, he got shocked. Because doctor said your mom has a cancer. Can you imagine that how life is harsh to an only seven years old boy?

Actually, I did not have newly arrived refugees in that time. However, my colleagues were coming together and they were talking about their problems. They were also organising a getting to know each other program for a week long. In this program they were checking for their school material needs, accommodations, translator etc. They were also getting additional support from one of the top universities in the city. They asked university to have student teachers in their program for helping them about translating, teaching and parent visits.

Jana's project is really cool. I think schools can give it a try and integrate into students' development. I have afew community projects in my school. They are etwinning projects. My pupils are very happy for involving these projects. It's great as a teacher to be a bridge between them and world cultures.
