Family: Our parents are a major influence on what we eat. They have the money to buy the food. They also (most of the time) cook the food, so most of what we eat are influenced by our family. Some of the time taste is also influenced by our family. From a young age, we have been eating what our family likes, so that may mean when we try a new taste that is out of our 'family taste zone' we may not like it, because of the family taste we have got used to.
Culture/ Religion/ Ethical: In some culture's there are foods that can not be eaten. For example in Indian culture, Hindus cannot eat beef (cow meat). Hindus consider cow as a holy animal. So Hindus
are influenced by others in the same religion and culture to not eat beef.
Tradition: Food traditions are also passed on through generations, and families. For example, on Christmas family's cook turkey and make Christmas pudding. This tradition has been passed on through generations and now we are influenced by the people who created this tradition to uphold this oral history.
Thenuka
Kahurangi 9WLBU
Ocean Strong

Media:
In the world at the moment, there is a lot of pressure put on people to be 'beautiful'. Unfortunately, to some people, the word 'beautiful' implies that you have to be super skinny with perfect features and only weigh 50kgs. Because of this stereotype, there is a lot of pressure for people to change what they eat.

For instance, instead of eating some chocolate when you are snackish, you might eat an apple or banana - which might not satisfy your hunger completely, but at least its healthier than the chocolate that you were going to eat. I mean can you just imagine how much sugar is in those few squares?!

Sometimes cutting down on the sugar and fats you consume is a good thing, but once you start dieting heavily, it can lead to other problems like anorexia and other eating disorders.

By Sophia,
Whero 9WLBU

Choice:
Sometimes I choose what I want to eat. For example if it's a school day I would normally eat something healthy, but if its the weekend then I would most likely eat junk food. It could also depend on what mood we are in, if i'm feeling productive I would eat healthy food and if I wasn't and lazy I would eat junk food. Most times people are allergic to some foods so they can't have it since they will have a reaction. This is when the person didn't make the choice, this is when your body makes the choice.
Senses:
I would eat food for what it looked like, smelled like and tasted like. Most people would rather eat food and enjoy it, so if it smelled really good, looked nice then I would try it. If it was unpleasant taste and didn't look appealing, I wouldn't bother to eat it.

By Jiya - Whero 9AVIN

In a world where time is money, lots of people don't often prepare a hearty meal before heading out the door. Processed food bars, bags of chips, and cereals are often the thing you grab before heading out the door in the morning. We are living in a world where cheap is good and fast is better, which has unfortunately paved the way for a massive increase in the rate of obesity.

Jobs can also lead to eating disorders thanks to the massive pressure they place on the (for example 'models') shoulders, to fit into a tiny box they label as beautiful. The never ending criteria on weight, appearance, and how they carry themselves is near impossible to carry out. This makes the models to believe they aren't 'slim' enough for the job which leads to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.

Kowhai 9WLBU

Likes; dislikes: We all have our own favourites and dislikes, and that is the main influence on what we eat. For example, if you don't like cheese, you avoid eating it in any of your meals, but if you really like chocolate, you try eating snippets of it whenever you can.
Health problems: Sometimes it's not what you want to eat-but you can't help it. Some people are allergic to certain foods e.g. nuts, gluten
And then there are those people who have serious medical conditions that restrict them of eating foods that contain a large amount of a certain ingredient e.g. diabetes.
Maybe you're overweight, and you want to appear skinnier so you decide to go on a diet of healthy foods. Another reason right there✧(ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ *:･ﾟ

Mental conditions: Anorexia is lack or loss of appetite for food. I personally think of it also as a mental issue. Eating disorders and depression also have an effect on what you eat.
Last reason: we are hungry and we need the nutrition.

By: Jingqiao 9AVIN Kakariki

Most of us like Pizza, Chocolate, Ice cream and the reason that we do is because it tastes so good. These were the most processed foods with high amounts of fat and added sugar. It also contains a flavouring agent called Monosodium glutamate or MSG. I mean if you were to go into a store and buy food to eat you are most likely going to buy the foods that you like which are usually these kind of addictive foods, (i mean who can resist chocolate).

These foods influence what we eat because they very bad for us but are the sort of foods that are so addictive that it's worth it. Take Doritos for example; they have a powerful savoury flavor known as umami , which is a savoury taste, which is one of the five basic tastes (together with sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and saltiness). And are also the kind of food that almost seems healthy (or at least that's what i always thought) but are actually full of preservatives and fats. They have a addictive substance that makes us want to come back for more therefore meaning that not only are you eating all this unhealthy food but you are also wasting precious money on it.
-Natalie 9WLBU Kowhai

Society

Advertising

One of the influences that affect what you eat is advertising. Advertising is everywhere and you see it everyday. Food advertisements can be very persuasive and they’re everywhere you look: on TV, in supermarkets, on billboards, to name a few.

Advertisements influence in many different ways. Anything ranging from the colors used to the people starring in the adverts. The colors used draw our eyes to the adverts making us read the advert.

For another example of the way that advertising influences our food, take the Diet Coke ads. They show slim, flirtatious women that always win over the attractive males. This places a false picture in people's minds, which affects how they look at themselves and their peers. Advertisements show you what they think the perfect life looks like, and when we see these advertisements constantly portrayed in magazines, social media and online, it changes our view of the world and makes us believe what is not true.

As said in “The Negative Effects of Advertisements on Society” by Sofo Archon; advertising makes us associate happiness with consumerism. These ad’s trick us into thinking that we need certain products to make us feel better, which is not true. We feel the need to buy things to make us change the way we appear so we are equal to society.

Another negative effect of advertisements is that they make us think that everything we need in order to be like everyone else is on sale. They change prices from 10% to 70%, and lure us in to spending money on things we don't actually need. This makes us work harder to purchase things that we believe will make our life better when in reality it is only brainwashing us even more to believing what is not real.

Overall, there are many ways that advertising can influence us, and the truth is it does affect each and everyone of us and there is no way to avoid it. As long as we are aware of the intentions advertisements have we can limit how much we believe them and avoid living the false life they encourage you to live.

A Lot of the time people eat things like Pizza, chocolate, chips and so much more because of taste. If you went into a supermarket you would most likely buy things that you like which are usually the most addictive foods like what was stated before. Sometimes people try to hard to look like someone there not so they think that if they eat one healthy thing a lot it will be better for them.

Take a food like chips for a moment think about when your hungry and you decide to grab a packet of chips from your cupboard, Chips have a addictive twist to them which makes them popular for an everyday day snack. Some people spend too much money because of self influence and don't think about what's good for you and what's not.

How taste influences my food choices.
When I eat food I always think about the taste whether it is sweet, tangie, bitter, strong, rich or flavourless. When I taste food I always rely on the the texture and how good it tastes. If I like the texture or if I like the taste I will enjoy the meal or the snack that I'm having.

How Society Influences What we Eat?
How Society Influences What we Eat?

Influence for self:
Influence for self:

Others' influence on what we Eat:
Others' influence on what we Eat:

Others Influence on what we eat:
Others Influence on what we eat:

Influences that society has on the foods we eat.
In ads it shows a bunch of skinny people eating unhealthy food, making you think it’s okay to eat them, and that you will still be fit. But if it was the opposite and it had larger people, you most likely would not eat it. They make the food look better or more healthy than it actually is, which is false advertisement. They also show ads roundabout when most people will be going to have meals, making you crave them more than other foods. Especially fast foods, which are cheap and easy to get, unlike healthy food which tends to be more expensive and harder to find at restaurants.

Why we eat what we eat (Society). Quinn At home, on a train or at the big game we all get exposed to societies food propaganda. Adverts. We all see them and go, that looks pretty good, but some people will go “hey that looks tasty, I wonder if they’re open”. Adverts don’t change your perspective alone it also depend on the price, some people might look at 2 items at a supermarket and think hmm well this one is free range and was checked by experts if this company is healthy, buuuuuuuuut this one costs a dollar less! So lets get that one. Also on the newspaper it might say fats bad for you eat less of it by buying my book or less sugar, butter etc. Which will keep changing going through all types of foods till the sun goes down. Some jobs will make your diet change like being a model/superstar, or working an early till late office job models and superstars will get self conscious on how they look. It isn't hard to do. When you eat progressively less you get a stomach ache and stop. Sometimes this isn’t the same for supermodels/stars or even people that want to look like one. Getting into the disorder is the easy part getting out is the hard part. Office jobs are basically the opposite. When people work at an office job from 6 to 8 they tend to stop worrying about general things, like what they eat and like I said before do the opposite of getting something like anorexia and eat more. Being in the city won't help with ads at every turn and having an early to late job won’t give you time to make something healthy so they start eating at the food court near you and stop you eating at home most of the time

Take a food like chips for a moment think about when your hungry and you decide to grab a packet of chips from your cupboard, Chips have a addictive twist to them which makes them popular for an everyday day snack. Some people spend too much money because of self influence and don't think about what's good for you and what's not.

One of the influences that affect what you eat is advertising. Advertising is everywhere and you see it everyday. Food advertisements can be very persuasive and they’re everywhere you look: on TV, in supermarkets, on billboards, to name a few.

How Society Influences What we Eat?

It isn't hard to do. When you eat progressively less you get a stomach ache and stop. Sometimes this isn’t the same for supermodels/stars or even people that want to look like one.

These days people are to busy to set time for a full meal and often people are settling with the unhealthy stuff like a bag of chips or a quick burger at McDonalds. The fact that people are eating unhealthy because of whats cheap is increasing the amount of obesity and bullying.

Often Jobs or school can also lead to people being pressured into looking a certain way. Like models going full vegetarian and eating full meals less in a day causing eating disorders as in anorexia.Sometime bullying can also cause kids to feel a certain way especially if they are told they are to fat or to skinny. In some places certain foods night be more popular like if you lived on a farm growing berry's of breeding cows you might have more access to some foods. Our country is filled with opinions and some can influence what we eat and some dont.

Our family affects a lot of what we eat.Our parents have the money to buy what we eat and they usually make the meal. Apparently, where and who you eat with can affect your food habits. Children that eats with their family tends to eat healthier food (Fruits, vegetables, whole grains). Also if you don't eat in front of the T.V, the same 'effects'.
~
Culture also affects what we eat. Like in the Indian culture, they can't eat meat. Or your culture might eat a certain meal on New Year's day. Or like, have traditional days where you eat a traditional meal. For something a little more well-known, Christmas. Lots of families eat Turkey and pudding on Christmas.

Social media and friends can affect us as well. Trending cafe's like Starbucks, popular deserts like ice cream rolls and other things.

Social influence on what you eat:
Social Media.
These days everything has to be Instagram worthy. From that coffee you ordered in the morning to the over decorated smoothie you created for a snack. When in real life you would NEVER EVER EVER eat that smoothie.
It takes the limelight away from the real essence of the food. Its taste. Half of the food you see on social media doesn't taste even half as good as it looks.

But social media has changed some meals. Take breakfast for example. It went from a simple bowl of cereal to avocado toast, smoothies or maybe bacon and eggs.

Taste
Taste is one of the main reasons we may or may not eat something, especially in adults, if you don't like something you're not going to eat it.
as children we have slightly less choice as we eat what our parents put on the table, but at the end of the day, many parents will cave into the likes and dislikes of fussy children.

How Society influences what we eat?
How Society influences what we eat?

Other's influence on what we eat
Other's influence on what we eat
~
Social media and friends can affect us as well. Trending cafe's like Starbucks, popular deserts like ice cream rolls and other things.

Social influence on what you eat:
Social influence on what you eat:
Social Media.
These days everything has to be Instagram worthy. From that coffee you ordered in the morning to the over decorated smoothie you created for a snack. When in real life you would NEVER EVER EVER eat that smoothie.
It takes the limelight away from the real essence of the food. Its taste. Half of the food you see on social media doesn't taste even half as good as it looks.

But social media has changed some meals. Take breakfast for example. It went from a simple bowl of cereal to avocado toast, smoothies or maybe bacon and eggs.

Self influence on what we eat:
Self influence on what we eat:

Self Influence on what we eat:
Self Influence on what we eat:

How Society Influences What we Eat?
How Society Influences What we Eat?

Influence for self:
Influence for self:

Others' influence on what we Eat:
Others' influence on what we Eat:

Others Influence on what we eat:
Others Influence on what we eat:

Another negative effect of advertisements is that they make us think that everything we need in order to be like everyone else is on sale. They change prices from 10% to 70%, and lure us in to spending money on things we don't actually need. How Society Influences What we Eat?

It isn't hard to do. When you eat progressively less you get a stomach ache and stop. Sometimes this isn’t the same for supermodels/stars or even people that want to look like one. Getting into the disorder is the easy part getting out is the hard part. Office jobs are basically the opposite. Being in the city won't help with ads at every turn and having an early to late job won’t give you time to make something healthy so they start eating at the food court near you and stop you eating at home most of the time

Mostly, people eat because they feel like it, or more plainly that your body demands for food.
Although, most people eat everything they are given, there are some exceptions to why people eat certain things.

1. Its how it looks - mostly this dosent effect much people (as long as it dosent look like cow droppings or anything similar...)
But it has a bit of influence over some poeple.
this could be a problem or not.

2. how it smells: this is the bigger thing, because no one would eat anything that smells like someones poo.

3. How it taste: this is like me coming up with assumptions until ive tried it, just from getting whifs of it and giving it my duluxe "i'll throw you in the bin" stare.
Honestly you cant tell until you've tried it.

4. texture. i hate mushrooms because of the texture, but this is not a big thing.

That’s why time is important when preparing food and eating food.

How Society Influences What we Eat?
How Society Influences What we Eat?
