The international community didn't take action during the course of the genocide. NATO countries didn't called attention to the genocides as they were happening. The US had just lost the war in Vietnam, which made the government deep in debt, popular disapproval, and the unwell to take part in the Cambodian Genocide. Even though their public stance against the genocide gradually strengthened, it did not make them take action. The international media remained silent about the genocide until the KR regime was overthrown. However, this still did not lead to an international investigation.

In 1978, Vietnam invaded Cambodia to stop Khmer Rouge border attacks and was able to crush the regime in about two weeks. By that time, approximately two million people had died from execution, starvation, disease, and exhaustion from the Khmer rouge

Killing Fields: Extermination

The “Killing Fields” are filled of a lot graves with innocent Cambodians. Their bodies and clothes are all through the fields. This is their horrible resting place on earth. There was approximately 14,000 murdered, mangled, dirty bodies all around the fields. The "Killing Fields" are now a "tourist attraction" and hopefully a tribute to the people who died during the Cambodian genocide.

In 1975 the Khmer Rouge (KR), a communist rebel group, led by dictator Pol Pot,defeated the U.S. backed Lon Nol democratic regime. Cambodians were first happy that the corrupt Lon Nol government was overthrown, However, the KR soon began rebuilding Cambodia into a country like Mao's communist China, which threatened safety and rights of Cambodians. Fearing for their lives, the civilians of cities and towns were forced to relocate to the countryside where they would live in communities and work as slaves under horrible conditions. Whoever refused to leave their homes or didn't leave quickly (including the sick and elderly) were killed.

The Khmer Rogue thought there was to much western influence and that they must rid Cambodia of this influence. Anyone who wore glasses, had an education or speak another language would be considered a target.

They discriminated between the old and new. The old people were peasants, farmers. The new were had better jobs or education. They would target and kill the new people and send the old people to the fields.

The Cambodians were brought to certain labor camps. When they were being sent to the camps they were not aloud to take anything and were unaware of what was going on. Anyone who refused to go were killed one was killed the spot. Lots of bulidings such school, hospitals, and farms were destroyed in the process. When the Cambodians were taken to the labor camps they were forced to work as long as they were needed or unable to do anything.

The Khmer Rouge’s polices and followers were lead to understand that the citizens of Cambodia had been tainted by exposure to outside ideas. The Khmer Rouge persecuted the people who had an education, such as doctors, lawyers, and current or former military and police. Christian, Buddhist and Muslim citizens also were specifically targeted.

The Khmer Rogue took their Prisoners to "Killing fields" for their execution. Many people were taken here and killed.

The Vietnamese soon invaded to find everything that not much was covered up. While Pol Pot and the Khmer Rogue denied what happened, it was clear the a genocide had taken place.
