All the meetings are viewed via Webex. We discussed our responsibilities and expectations of our observations. Elisa explained that the children we will be observing range between 10 months- 18 months, so we would need to be flexible with the times because the child takes naps and it can sometimes lead into the initial meeting time. The children we are observing are home based, so most of the time it is just the mentor teacher, the child, and their parent. So she mentioned that the child is younger, so their attention span is limited. We have not decided or assigned each other to a specific lesson plan date. It was nice meeting both Elisa and Alex, and I look forward to working with them and learning from both of them. Our first observation is scheduled for February 2nd at 2pm. First observation rescheduled for February 3rd.

The site we are observing at is home based, so mom and the child were on the other side of the screen along with, our Mentor Elisa, myself and Alex. When the camera first turned on for the child to see us, Elisa automatically began singing "good afternoon" to the child. The she began singing The Itsy Bitsy Spider, which is a song he first heard at the previous meeting. She then introduced the child to myself and Alex and the entire time the child looked confused. The mentor teacher then retrieved a book called, "Dear Zoo". In each page, there are different animals, when he saw the different animals Ezekiel smiled and made noises. The next activity was finger painting. As the mother went to gather her materials, Elisa engaged the child in "head, shoulders, knees and toes". Me and Alex participated and Ezekiel continued to observe our screens. The mother engaged with the child as she asked what color paint he wanted and held up each bottle. Teacher Elisa mentioned to the mother that Ezekiel shows cautious exploring as he is exploring little by little. The child places his right index finger into the paints and places it onto the paper. Teacher Elisa ask the mother if she would like to dip his whole hand in, she proceeded to do so. The child looked confused. Once the child was done, the mother helped him wash his hands. The teacher began going over the child's IDP (Individual Development Plan) and stated the goals he met and the goals he needed to keep working towards. Our next observation is set  for Tuesday, February 9th.

She then engaged in The Itsy Bitsy Spider and used hand movements to engage him. Teacher Elisa brought out one of her hand puppets and it was a sheep, Ezekiel looked at the sheep and pointed at the sheep. His mom said,"How does a sheep go?" He then said BAAAAAA. This week activity was to allow Ezekiel to work on his fine motor hands. The activity was to place an object inside the sock and for the child to retrieve it.The mother guided Ezekiel to add the ball to the sock, once it was in, he stuck his hand into the bottom of the sock. His mother asked, "How are you going to get it out?" He slowly lifted his hand out of the sock, after getting it stuck a couple of times. Teacher Elisa asked mom is she had anything smaller, so that it would be easier from him to retrieve out of the sock. She had a toy car, she gave the car to Ezekiel and he engaged more with placing it in the sock himself and pulling it back out. After a couple of minutes, he continued to engage in the activity. Teacher Elisa mentioned that they will be introducing feelings and that this will allow him to imitate faces by using a mirror. Elisa went back to the puppet and identified the eyes and asked Ezekiel where his eyes were. At the end of the observation, Elisa sang goodbye and Ezekiel clapped. Our next observation is set for February 16th.

They went on to sing The Itsy Bitsy Spider, as they both used their hands to make a spider. In the background Ezekiel's older brother made up a song about dinosaurs with the tone of the Itsy Bitsy Spider. Ezekiel eyes light up at the talk of the dinosaur. Teacher Elisa retrieved a book about dinosaurs and showed it to Ezekiel. He extended his arm out and began touching the screen to touch the dinosaur. They identified the different colors and names of the dinosaurs. The main focus today was feelings. Elisa had a book that had characters with different feelings. The first feeling was happy. The mom handed Ezekiel a mirror and asked him to be happy and say cheese. Immediately Ezekiel smiled and looked into the mirror. The next feeling was sad, the mother showed a sad face and asked him to be sad. Based on the emotions, he gravitated more to happy and smiling. At his point he took control the mirror and brought up to his face and smiled. Teacher Elisa asked mom if Ezekiel throws tantrums, she said yes and Elisa mentioned that it can be beneficial to place a mirror when this is occurring because it can allow them to acknowledge their feelings. By discussing their feelings it can allow them a sense of how they are and explore their emotions in the mirror. At the end of the observation, Elisa sang goodbye and Ezekiel clapped. Our next observation is set for February 23rd.

He recently turned 12 months. The meeting began with Teacher Elisa singing, "Good-afternoon Junior". She then asked if they should sing good afternoon to mom. She began singing, "buenos trades mama, como estas". When Teacher Elisa was singing it, Junior had the biggest smile on their faces. Today's focus was to see if Junior was able to do different imitations with this hands. Elisa did different action with him and he was able to wave bye, pick his hands up and high five. She was going to to give more action word practices so mom could practice more actions with him. After a could of minutes, Junior began getting agitated, so teacher Elisa sang, "Goodbye Armando, adios Junior, te veré una vez más". The remaining of the meeting Teacher Elisa showed mom  a checklist that contained skills the child should know at this certain age. They were based on social emotional, language, cognitive and movement. Armando was administrating all the skills that were mentioned. Mom mentioned that the child liked to spend most of his time outdoors to explore nature.

The first observation was with two children named Camila and Sebastian, who are siblings. Teacher Elisa began by singing "Good Afternoon Camila, how are you"? She proceeds by continuing the song and sings to Sebastian and then they sing to mommy. The next song they sang was "Itsy Bitsy Spider". Teacher Elisa was doing hand movements and both Camila and Sebastian were singing along and engaging by also moving their hands. At the time of the observation they were having a snack. Teacher Elisa brought out her sheep puppet, immediately it catches Camila's attention and she starts waving. "I am a sheep and I go baaaaa, says teacher Elisa. Their mother ask can you make the same noise as the sheep, and Camila replies baaaa. The children and their families play "rock, paper, scissors" so Sebastian had mentioned it to Teacher Elisa so they began playing it. Mom told Sebastian to show teacher that he can count to 10. Sebastian process to count to 10. Teacher Elisa praised him and told him that he did an amazing job. Teacher Elisa and mom mentioned using white boards to allow both children to practice their shapes and other skills. Teacher Elisa ended the meeting with singing "Goodbye Sebastian, we'll see you once again" and then sings "Goodbye Camila, we'll see you once again".

The second part of our observation was with Ezekiel. Over the week Ezekiel and his family visited a Dinosaur exhibit. He had a dinosaur he continued to play with. After a couple of seconds mom handed him a piece of slime. In the beginning, he was unsure of what to do with it. He then started moving the slide towards his mouth and his mom said "It does not go in your mouth". she put it back in the container, and he began pointing it the container. The mom said, "Do you want the slime"? Ezekiel shook his head yes, and mom replied wait. He then replied "wait". Teacher Elisa replied, "Ezekiel you repeated a word, good job1" His mother then handed him the slide again. He then began manipulating it and pushing it in between his fingers. His mother wanted him to try pulling it apart. She put the slime in between both of his hands and spread them apart. Ezekiel looked confused on why it was separating, and ended up pulling one side of the slime.

Our lesson plan was learning about dry and went when it comes to water and cotton balls.  In today’s meeting, Ezekiel’s older brother Edgar was in the meeting and wanted to participate. When we first began the lesson plan, with an introduction good afternoon song, Alex then read a book called, Wet and Dry by Erica Donner. I then asked mom to gather the materials we will be using. I mentioned to mom is he had been in contact with a cotton ball before and she said he has. I decided that it would be fun to see his reaction and she handed him a cotton pad for both hands. He looked and felt them for a bit and then we decided to begin the lesson plan. Mom began by handing Ezekiel a paper. I asked him, “What color is your paper Ezekiel, mine is green”. Mom replied, “tell her that your paper is red”. I figured that because he was younger, and I am not in the room that mom could guide the child’s hand in the process. She got a cotton pad and dipped in in the water, then gave Ezekiel on and tossed it in the water. On my end I did the same, once Ezekiel understood the concept, he moved the cotton pad onto the paper to begin drawing lines. After a couple of attempts, mom handed him a Q-tip and he tried a couple of more times. I mentioned how this was a great way to have a mess free activity, but then recommended that a good idea could be to add food coloring to the way to see the how it looked when on white paper. One concept we were able to cover was color changing. We realize that depending on the paper we used and the color of water, the remains would leave a mixture color. For example, mom decided to add blue food coloring to the water and Ezekiel placed the cotton pad in and when it went onto the yellow paper it turned green. I asked him if he saw that the paper is now green. She then added red into water and when he put it on the blue paper it turned purple. At this point, Ezekiel was interested in the water and dipped his fingers in it. I asked him how the water felt and if it was cold or hot. Mom then began giving him cotton pads and he placed them in the water. Teacher Elisa says that Ezekiel is showing science consistency as he is examining the process from wet to dry. During this process he was looking at the dry white pads and watching them as the absorbed the red water. After a couple of minutes Ezekiel became fascinated with the idea that there was water in the bowl and began dropping the cotton bad in the bowl and seeing the splash. Mom also retrieved the soaked cotton pad and decided to drop it onto the paper, when she did you were able to see a splash imprint. Ezekiel was engaged with the activity for about 40 minutes until we began wrapping up the lesson. We sang goodbye and Teacher Elisa began speaking with mom. Our next observation will be March 19th.

Today they were playing with play dough. Teacher Elisa began the meeting with singing good morning to both Sebastian and Camila. She continued into singing The Itsy Bitsy Spider. During the singing, Camila caught my eye because she was rocking back and forth as Teacher Elisa sang. When the children began manipulating the playdough, Elisa mentioned to mom that during this activity, Camila will be learning concepts through how to squish and manipulate while Sebastian will be learning how to got the dough and possibly make shapes. Teacher Elisa asked Sebastian what color he was using, he replied "blue". When asking Camila, she was more confused and did not answer, so mom asked Sebastian what color Camila's was and he replied, "green". Camila looked to be struggling with the large piece of playgoing, so Elisa mentioned to mom that she can roll the play-dough into small pieces so that it can be easier for Camila to squish. For several minutes mom and teacher Elisa spoke about mom's future and other conversations pertaining to the children. During that time, the children were engaged in the play dough and were using play scissors and a compressor to smash the play-dough. After a minute or so, Camila became frustrated with her play-dough, and Elisa acknowledged her frustration and mentioned to mom, to also acknowledge it. Mom then gives Camila a new color of play dough which allowed her to calm down. At the end of the meeting, teacher Elisa retrieved her finger puppets and began sining, "Five Little Monkeys". Both children swayed their bodies and moved their heads as they listened to the song. Camila retrieved the play-dough lid and places it next other ear. At first i was confused but soon realized she was pretending to call the doctor on the monkeys. Sebastian then got a pile of play-dough and also pretended it was a phone. When it was time to say goodbye, Teacher Elisa sang goodbye to both children. Our next observation is scheduled for March 23rd.

Beforehand, we already determined that she will be implementing the second lesson plan and I will assist by reading the book. During the zoom meeting Alex went over the lesson plan she chose for Ezekiel. She wanted to “invite Ezekiel to explore a toy washing activity”, because he did so well with the previous lesson plan, we had implemented. 
 
Being I am implementing the book portion of the lesson plan, she told me about the book she chose and mentioned a brief summary about it. She said that it depicted different action and results based on water. So, it fit perfect with the lesson she chose. One of the main worries we had with this lesson plan was the mess. We understood that the child enjoyed water and it did get a bit messy. But we both determined that a way to control the mess would be to add a towel underneath the activity, so that it could catch most of the water.
 
We ended the meeting with going over any questions we had, but we didn’t not have any and feel the lesson plan was well throughout out. We plan on implementing the lesson plan on April 13th.

Beforehand, we already determined that I will be implementing the first lesson plan and she will assist by reading the book. During the zoom meeting, I began discussing the idea for the lesson plan. We also had to decide what would be the easiest and inexpensive activity for a toddler. I mentioned that I would be a great idea to do something with sensory because Ezekiel is hands on and will be able to benefit from the activity. We went through the lesson plan and covered the key factors. Being Alex would be covering the book portion, I should it on my screen being I was able to find a pdf of the book. We went through the pages and discussed that she could give examples to the words and pictures the child would be viewing. We also mentioned how we were unsure if share screen was possible, but that we would let our mentor teach know. In the case it was unavailable, Alex had a physical book.
 
When it came to funds of knowledge, I felt that we had a great discussion about home life. From previous observations we were aware of the child and his family. We knew that he was raised during a pandemic and was not able to experience certain things as a park So we made sure that certain things would not be made an example. We also discussed a possible bi-lingual lesson being mom is bi-lingual, but then we discovered she does not speak to Ezekiel in Spanish. We knew that his mother is a great help when it comes to Ezekiel’s education and wanted to ensure everything was easy enough for her to be able to assist with. As we continued to go over the lesson plan, we both gave feedback on our expectations and made it aware to each other that we are here for each other if we needed it. 
 
We ended the meeting with any questions and went back over the day we would be implementing and when we would be sending it to our mentor teacher. We decided to implement the lesson plan on March 9th.

In this case mom gathered a tub full for dinosaurs for Ezekiel to line up. Mom began the structure of the activity and got 1 dinosaur, as she placed them down she counted, "1 dinosaur, 2 dinosaurs". Ezekiel picked up one of the dinosaurs and threw it next to the dinosaur that mom had lined up. but he knocked over the dinosaur. Mom told Ezekiel that they had to be lined up, so she said that she will go first. Ezekiel picked up a green dinosaur and began making roaring noises, he got the dinosaur  and began hitting the orange one. Mom said,"are the dinosaurs fighting?" 

Teacher Elisa mentioned to mom that when lining up the items not the ground, it is the same concept as if he would be stacking block on top of each other. With this activity, Ezekiel has gained a concept of 1 on 1 coordination with his hands. This activity was desiged an related to math, and eventually Ezekiel would be able to gain a concept of learning to count and exposure to different colors by coordinating them. Ezekiel began playing with an abacus. As he began pushing mom was counting with him and then he began spinning them.

Then they decided to play with bowling pins. Mom stacked the pins up right, and Ezekiel gravitated toward the ball. He looked at the ball and then moved his head to look at the pins. His mother could tell his eagerness, and said, "ready, set, go". As soon as she finished he threw the ball and knocked them down. Elisa began talking with mom about the older brother Edgar, mom was mentioning that Ezekiel always wants what Edgar has , but Elisa mention that it is important to encourage sharing but also ownership of his own things. After a couple of minutes, Ezekiel said "cars" so mom mentioned that they have to clean up the bowling pins. Teacher Elisa began sining "clean up ,clean up, everybody everywhere". He then saw his norther and began gravitating towards him, so Elisa sang the "goodby song" to both Ezekiel and mom. Ezekiel began clapping and waving back at the screen. Mom helped him get the car bucket out but then mentioned "dinosaurs" so mom gave him the bucket with dinosaurs. 

While teacher Elisa talked with mom, I can see Ezekiel emptying the container of cars. There was one car stuck so he was shaking it, until it finally came out.

Our lesson plan was a "car washing" sensory bin. Based on the previous lesson plan, we learned that Ezekiel enjoyed water, and we wanted to implement that again. The idea was that the would be able to use soap and water and "wash" the objects he choose.

The lesson began by Teacher Elisa welcoming Ezekiel, and she sang the “Good Morning” song she usually sings with him. Alex then began singing the song “I Had a Little Turtle”. Soon after I took over and read the book Bubbles, Bubbles Everywhere by Dr. Dee. Alex spoke a little about bubbles and if he liked bubbles. That is when she transitioned into the activity and began getting the materials and so did his mother. The lesson started off by obtaining a bowl and adding water or bubbles to the bowl, then they added an object. Alex used toy cars and Ezekiel used dinosaurs. The dinosaurs he was using were dirty with cornstarch from a previous lesson he had did with Elisa, so it was perfect for the current lesson plan. Alex asked Ezekiel if he wanted to wash the dinosaur. He began dunking the dinosaur in and out of the bowl of bubbles and he began to splash. Alex said, “did it splash”? He began to laugh and then mom asked if he liked the water and he replied, “yah”! He then began using his hands and placed them at the bottom of the bowl. Teacher Elisa mentioned that she liked how Ezekiel was using both hands to place into the water. He then noticed that there was another object that he didn’t use yet, a whisk. 
 
The mom handed him the whisk and she told him to mix the bubbles. When he began mixing the bubbles it made a big bubble and he said “pop” as he placed his finger in the bubble. Ezekiel handed the whisk back to mom and then asked for it again and began mixing once again. I thought it was very interesting that he was aware of what side of the whisk to use. Then he decided to use both his hands and play with the water and he began splashing. His mom handed him a clean towel so he can dry his hands. He got the towel and dropped it into the bowl of water. Alex mentioned that he can use that towel to clean his toys, mom guided him on how he can clean the toys and then when they were done, she rang out the water that was trapped in the tub. Ezequiel tried but he was not able to accomplish it so mom did it again and he liked it so he began laughing. mom continued this process for a couple more minutes and Ezekiel said, “ready, set, go” and mom rang out the water once again. After a couple of more minutes, he said he was “all done”. Alex thanked him for playing with us and discussed a little bit about water and bubbles to wrap up the lesson. Teacher Elisa sang the “goodbye” song and then the lesson was complete.

We decide to touch basis so that we were both prepared for our lesson implementation for the following day. My duties for the lesson plan was to read a book to Ezekiel, Alex was the one who had the book, so she mentioned that she would photo copy the book pages and send them to me that day. Alex had messaged Elisa to inform her if we were still set to do the lesson plan the following day.  Unfortunately our mentor did not reply but we still hand plans to conduct it. That night Alex sent me the file and I began reviewing the book. Being it was my first time seeing and reading that book, I wanted to be well aquatinted with it, so that I was not struggling with it during out lesson plan implementation.

Later that night, Elisa, our mentor teacher finally replied. She mentioned that the mother of the child confirmed and agreed to the lesson plan and that she would see us tomorrow. The next mounting, she sent a follow up email stating if we had any questions and wanted to meet before the meeting. Being we had discussed the plan the previous night I told Elisa that we were ready to go for our meeting at 1PM.

She began the observation by singing the song “Good Afternoon Ezekiel, how are you?” Today’s activity was going to be exploring a treasure chest. His mom filled it with different toys and accessories that the child would like. During the set-up time, Ezekiel was rolling around in the living room. Once he was ready, he stared at the treasure chest, his mom said, “we are going to do an activity with this”. He then opened up the chest and his mom said, “what did you find”? He pulled out an item and Elisa asked what it was. He shows it to the camera, and it is a pig. They ask him to make the sound, but he proceeds to open up the chest again and pull out a dinosaur. Ezekiel’s mom mentions that she has noticed him repeating thins, his older brother is into the 3 Little Pigs and he will repeat the words and gestures. Teacher Elisa mentioned that he is interested in the concept of opening and closing the chest. He reached into the chest again Anne pulled out an ABC book. This book was a crunchy felt and it showed different animals. Mom asked Ezekiel what he saw, and she began doing animal sounds. Mom read the entire book and put it back into the chest. Ezekiel Got the book back out from the chest and handed it back to his mom to read it again. When done with that he began reaching for the treasure chest, but it was too far from him, so he extended his arms and begin stretching and began making grunting noises. Teacher Elisa said, “help please”, and Ezekiel replied “help”. As Ezekiel’s mom and teacher Elis communicated the mom mentioned an experience she had with breastfeeding Ezekiel. It was a very interesting conversation and Elisa mentioned that she wanted to let us know that even though she is an educator she still does mental health check-ins with the parents and that it is not just teaching the child but also learning about the family and their experiences. Once their conversation was done, the next activity was going to be a hiding one. Mom retrieved a small turtle and placed in in one of her hands. She extended both of her hands and asked Ezekiel, “Where is the turtle, is it in this hand or the other hand”? When he would find the turtle in the correct hand, his mother would praise him, by either saying yay or giving him high five. As the mother was doing this activity and repeating it, you can see the big smile and the enjoyment he had as he was giggling through the process. Once the repeated the process a couple more times, Ezekiel began choosing both hands instead of the one.
