International Women's Day 2020 #eachforequal by

The theme for International Women's Day 2020 is Each for Equal. An equal world is an enabled world, and collectively, each of us can help create a gender equal world. SCTS is committed to equality, and the Women in Leadership and
Development programme is for just that. This is a chance for ALL members of staff to contribute their ideas on how SCTS can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements. So, what would you like to see from the Women in Leadership and Development programme? What topics would you like to see covered and what type of events would you like to attend? We want to hear all ideas! #eachforequal

Menopause matters

Menopause matters. A Wellbeing of Women survey (2016) reported that one in four women consider leaving their jobs because of menopausal symptoms. A TUC survey (2017) found that 88 per cent of women workers who had experienced the menopause felt it had an effect on working life and around 6 in 10 had witnessed the issue being treated as a joke in the workplace. We are currently developing menopause polices. To support this work, we want to collect your experiences and ideas on what these policies should look like. These ideas cafes will provide a supportive and friendly environment in which to share experiences and learn from each other.

I would like to see something being done (not only in SCTS but nationally) on the amount of time men are given off for paternity leave. This should be equal, and would help to rid the stigma of men not being allowed to be kind or caring fathers. It seems odd to some people that men would want the whole time off but if the mother wants to stay with her child why on earth would the father not?

Everyday Sexism

Every woman has experience of everyday sexism in some form and I think it's important to recognise that this happens at work too. While most people do their best to adhere to the Dignity at work policy and we are encouraged to 'challenge it, change it' however I think we should acknowledge that women are ultimately taught throughout their lives to accept this behaviour. Many women also fear the repercussions of challenging this behaviour as they will be seen as 'sensitive'. I think it would be helpful if training or other materials were produced to highlight these double standards and raise awareness of this issue.
