Mother - Sorolla

Indeed, this painting was made around fifty times by Paul Cézanne because he had a different vision each time. It represents our person which is declined in several facets, at the same time shy and sometimes extroverted. It puts forward the idea of a permanent evolution as for us who changed in the course of time and of the obstacles met since we have been growing up. The mountain shows that it is a long and difficult way for people to get to know ourselves completely, but the beautiful view we see once we reach the top proves that it is worth it.

Dark and full of colors at the same times, this piece of art describes us pretty well.
Rather than seeing light and dark as opposite, we prefer to see them as complementary. As showed in this piece of art, colors and darkness sublime one another. The harmony created by such contrast is a reminder that joy and euphoria can work in pair with a profound and deep sincerity.

This stained-glass window style painting also makes us think of the course of our life: 2 characters in their way to a blurry future, with only their past journeys clearly painted. As the light passes through the glass, billions of possible reflections coexist, but each ray of light will end up as a unique, beautiful and fleeting sight. And the combination and overlaps of these lights create an ever-changing picture anchored in a specific moment. Isn't that a perfect description of our lives and society?

Despite all the differences we may have, let's work together to create the most beautiful and sublime painting ever.

If we were a work of art, we would be Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks.

We chose this painting because we both felt that it represented our taste as well as our personalities. Hopper is a wonderful painter, and this painting might be his most famous but it’s far from being overrated. We both love realistic paintings and art in general and especially appreciate the atmosphere in this painting. The quiet and the darkness are what drew us to it in the first place. The fact that it’s supposed to take place in New York is evidently another reason why we like it so much. We enjoy the mysterious aspect of the scene: what are the characters doing here? Who are they? And as a bonus, the scene takes place in a restaurant, and we both love food!

If we were a work of art, we would be The Thinker / Le Penseur, made in 1904 by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. It is a famous bronze sculpture which represents a male figure in a pose of great thought and contemplation.

We can relate to this sculpture because The Thinker is lost in his thoughts…. and will stay in that state forever. On the contrary, we can try to turn these thoughts into action and leave place to creativity (symbolized by the work of the sculptor himself).

Hence our choice : as he incarnates the liminal space that exists between thought and action, he represents every step we need to achieve in order to get our project out of our minds directly intro the world. As we come from somewhat opposed fields (humanities and experimental sciences), this link between the mind and the world makes even more sense for us, and we hope that it’ll make sense for you too !

If we were a work of art, we would definitely be The White Square on White Background, who’s an oil on canvas, painted by russian artist Kasimir Malevich in 1918.

The reason we relate so much to this painting is that nothing trascendous hit the viewer at first sight. But this is also what makes it so thrilling: the nothingness of this work of art make us think a lot about philosophical and psychological effects art can practice on human brain. The more you look at the white backgroound and more the white square get significant and vis versa. The liminality between the painting itself and our brain is evident and the line, intrisinc. Moreover, this painting reflects very well the evolution of the perception and production of art all along history and since we are History lovers, it gives another interesting dimension to it!

Even during the night, when everything is usually cold, silent, and dark, in Paris, as we can see in this painting, there is light. There are people walking along the Seine, people dining in restaurants late, people having a drink at a café terrace… Paris is also a perfect city to party all night in a lot of different places. For all these reasons, we love walking in Paris during the night, especially crossing the Pont Neuf and watching the stars.

If we were a work of art, we would probably be La Décalcomanie (1966), one of the last paintings made by surrealist’s artist René Magritte.

The anonymous bowler hatted figure is so ordinary yet so mysterious and intriguing at the same time. The left silhouette seems to have been cut out from the folds of the curtain unveiling a peaceful hidden landscape whilst the right silhouette, of which only the outlines remain, alludes to his soul, his unconscious self. Although at first glance he seems to be ignoring the viewer by staring at the backdrop, the man actually contemplates the infinite richness of his inner world. The vibrant blue sky exudes an innate optimism, hope and freshness that we both share. We found this painting to be particularly striking as it compels us to reconcile appearances and deep nature of things: the double here becomes a mode to challenge existing assumptions regarding our perceptions of reality and others. Less formally, it depicts an attitude that we firmly believe is necessary to bring people together: to never judge a book by its cover.

If we were a work of art, we would be the Moroccan triptych of Matisse. Painted in 1912 during a journey in Tangier, it is composed of three canvases linked together by the colors and the atmosphere.

We’re both linked to this painting for many reasons. First, a geographical attachment: one of us is from Morocco, the country where the painting was made, and painter lived a long time and finish his life in Nice, where the other of us is from.

So, we’re both Mediterranean people. The colors used by Matisse to represent the light in the triptych are reversed, he replaces the warm colors by blue, a color which reminds us of the sea that we miss so much in this rainy Paris.

Apart from the value that this work has in our eyes, we find it objectively beautiful and calming. Indeed, the pastel colors give a relaxing aspect to this piece of art that does not blind us with bright colors. But it doesn’t prevent the fact that the few touches of bright colors make the painting alive.

The fun fact of our choice is that we discovered this piece of art together during an outing to the Louis Vuitton foundation where the painting was presented at an exhibition last year.
