I'm choosing the role of AI in education because my goal after Stony Brook is to become an educator and I think knowing how to use AI technology will become a crucial part of teaching. I am going to outline how Teachers are using AI in their classrooms to better teach students, become more efficient in lesson planning, and obtain an understanding of how well students are keeping up with course material. The use of AI in the classroom is becoming more and more significant for a few reasons. One reason is the ability for automatic grading on assignments, if teachers can spend less time grading assignments they can spend more time on creating lessons that can cater to each and every student. In addition to that extra time learning can become more personalized with the use of different AI platforms. There are AI platforms that will adjust the difficulty of assignments based on how well a student is understanding a topic. Students who are ahead can continue to be challenged and won't feel bored going over information they already know and students who are struggling can get the help they need and go over course material again. A big component of AI in the classroom is that it changes lesson plans and homework assignments from a one size fits all approach to a custom made method that gives students tailored assignments based on their skillset. Students may excel in one subject but have a more difficult time in another, AI can target and help students who may need extra help in a certain subject.

One facet of the classroom that AI has been helpful in is helping teachers design test and quizzes. Programs like Quizziz use AI to generate exams that will analyze student answers and Target areas where students can improve. Quizzes are a great indicator of how much information a student has retained but if students don't take the time to learn the parts they didn't understand, it's hard to move on to new lessons or continue to build from what was taught. Programs like Quizziz will identify the areas students need Improvement and generate additional lessons and assignments so that kids don't fall behind.

Education- AI Detection

It's no secret that with the exponential growth in the capability and availability of AI in the past few years, it's become easier for students to plagiarize and cheat on assignments. programs like turnitin are AI detection programs that can tell if an assignment was written by a human or generated by AI. Similarly another issue teacher's face are students who plagiarize their assignments. programs like grammarly and Just Done not only detect AI but scan the internet to see if the students' work was directly copied. Programs like these are important because they ensure that students do their own class work themselves. If students just use AI to generate responses or copy their work from someone else, it's not only cheating but they don't actually learn the material.

Another way AI can be used in the classroom is to help teachers make interactive lesson plans. One way teachers can do this is through a program called Edpuzzle. Programs like this allows teachers to record lessons that keep students engaged through AI generated pop-up questions throughout the video. Having students engaged during the lesson is crucial to helping them understand the material. Programs like Edpuzzle not only keep students engaged through the lesson through visual aids and questions on the material but also helps track their progress and lets teachers know what material they have understood and what areas need to be revisited.

Future Trends and Ethical Considerations

AI shows to have a promising future for educators in the classroom. AI helps teachers by automating tasks like grading quizzes and creating lesson plans, and even platforms like Chat GPT can give teachers new ideas about what kinds of things they can incorporate into their lessons. Along with these new uses of AI come some ethical concerns about how teachers use it. Chat bots are a form of conversation AI that can be helpful but come with certain risks of misinformation. AI pulls from information already on the internet but doesn't vet where the information comes from and could lead to inaccurate information being taught in classrooms. It’s important for teachers to know where the information they pull from AI comes from so they don't teach students inaccurate information. Another risk of using AI in the classroom comes through what are called hallucinations. Hallucinations are when AI programs generate responses that are purely made up by the program and aren’t pulled from any source at all. AI can misinterpret the topic you enter or provide information that’s completely inaccurate. Another risk that comes with the use of AI for teachers is that AI doesn’t understand personal emotions or human error as well as human teachers can. AI can’t understand if a student is struggling with a certain topic or how certain students learn differently than others like real teachers can. AI programs can certainly be helpful for teachers in the sense of automating general tasks but shouldn't be used to provide information being taught to students.

The Impact AI has had on society is already effecting many areas in the workplace, especially in the classroom. Teachers using AI allows them to automate certain tasks and incorporate new ideas and a broader perspective in the classroom. AI certainly has effects on the employment process in the school. Like many other industries, AI can be used by principals and superintendents for hiring teachers. Asking an AI program to pick between candidates can give an overview of why one teacher may be a better choice than another, but is still risky. AI programs can have potential biases which can lead to candidates being turned away because of things like their race or gender. AI can also create learning disparities in different schools across the country. AI has the opportunity to not only help educators teach better but can help students produce better assignments (when used correctly). This can create a divide however, students in lower-funded or impoverished communities will have a harder time gaining access to newer technology for their students. Students from lower-income communities already struggle to compete with wealthier communities as it is. Gaining fair access to technology is still an issue in a lot of districts nationwide. Another concern about the prevalent use of AI in the classroom is that an over-dependence on AI can take away from a student’s ability to think critically. If students become accustomed to using AI, They’ll have a harder time in the workforce when it comes to problem-solving or thinking strategically. AI certainly has the potential to be extremely helpful in the classroom but does come with societal concerns that need to be addressed.

Overall it was helpful to take the time and research the different programs that are becoming more prevalent in the world of education. Knowing what these programs are and how to use them is going to be crucial for future generations of teachers. While AI is going to be a helpful resource in the classroom for both teachers and students, it’s important to note that with the lack of funding in lower-income neighborhoods, certain schools are at risk of falling behind the schools in more affluent areas. The impact of the use of AI in education certainly has the potential to make life easier for teachers and allow them to spend more time helping students think critically and help their students with their individual needs.
