Tehya loves books and sharing a book with an adult helps to settle her. Tehya and I walked to the library to choose some flower/plant/insect life books together. One of the stories we read today had insects in and Jamie asked some great questions including "what kind of bee is that?" Showing his awareness of different kinds of bees. He is 3 and a half years old and extremely emotionally immature so this was a wonderful moment for us to try and explore that further. Arlo told me "do you know Ms Maria the things flowers have is nectar", again a wonderful topic and exploring point. We will taste honey in class next week as a mean to explore more about bees and perhaps helps learning evolve in that direction. The children have drawn or mark made with pencils and we will introduce colour next week. We used a 'special' new box of coloured chalk today and this was motivating for Tehya. She does not usually mark make and has weak fine motor skills. Tomorrow we will have a topic summit meeting for me to listen to the children and for them to initiate ideas about next weeks' activities. Today we looked at the yellow hibiscus flower a day after it had been picked. Children (Felicia and Hayley) talked about it being broken, so we talked about when you cut or pick flowers they die, they are not alive any more. Chris said "because we don't give them water". An immediate next step - tomorrow - since F3 have got cut flowers in class - is to take some of the wilting flowers to observe and promote talk about what happens when we cut plants and flowers. I hope to lead the children in the summit towards planting and caring for plants next week. I wonder how long a flower seed takes to grow will be a question to pose. Children might like the food colouring/carnation experiment. Lots of ideas...
