It is also important to understand that Text Dependent Questions doesn't necessarily mean the answer is found directly in the text. In third grade, I teach and require students to write the page where they found his/her answer to a question. We discuss meanings of paragraphs and why the author may have included the specific information.  

We need to teach students to be critical and analyze what they're reading. 

Following the herd is not what we want them to be like as adults.
