The 8th December, in Italy we have the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, it is a religious day that remembers the moment when the Archangel Gabriel visits Mary asking her to became the mother of God's son, and she accepts. For Italian people it's the day when the Christmas period starts, people celebrate it: decorating the Christmas tree, creating a crib scene, starting shopping for Christmas presents and having a family meal.

Christmas day customs in Greece- 1ST GENIKO LYKEIO THESSALONIKI, GREECE

One of the most beloved Christmas customs in Greece is carol singing. Every Christmas eve children go around town ringing the doorbells of strangers’ houses. If the householders open up their doors the children start singing a song. This song is specific but differs according to the place in Greece one comes from (Crete, Macedonia, Icaria etc.). When the singing is over the householders must give the children money. Personally I think this is the best Christmas custom because it really shows the hospitable nature of greek people as well as their incredible songwriting skills!

Also, the ornaments on the Christmas tree symbolize various things about the birth of Christ. We put christmas lights (and in the old days when there was no electricity they used to put candles) to symbolize that Christ is the Light of Life. The Christmas balls, which are traditionally red, symbolize the sacrifice of the Savior for all of us (red symbolizes blood). The garlands (a wreath of flowers and leaves) we sometimes put on the tree symbolize something joyful and happy, which is none other than the birth of Christ.

The marshmallows (in the shape of a walking stick) symbolize the shepherd's walking stick that served to get the shepherd's sheep on the right path. This symbolism in Christmas symbolizes Jesus Christ who wanted to bring the world on the right path.
